What’s the point of dev’s updating their apps for new systems if they have to use the old tools. Every time someone as a valid complaint against Win8 the response is to use older software. If the solution is to use the old stuff, then why is the new stuff even being written? Do you not see an issue with that?

Except that MS is now “encouraging” devs to write Metro only apps and thereby forcing people off of the desktop. That’s the issue here. It will now cost $500/dev to create desktop apps. The free SDK compiler isn’t available any longer either.

How many of those were downgrades to XP. That was a big deal for a while, and it continued into the release of Win7. Once Win7 had proven itself that trend tapered off, but all those XP licenses were counted as Vista/Win7 licenses after their respective releases.

That software that proceeded VS Express was compiled using the SDK, guess what, the SDK no longer has a compiler. There is no way of writing desktop apps for free starting with VS11.

Sure there is, VS2005 was the only version that had the no-commercial software clause.

How are dev’s supposed to keep their software up-to-date and cutting edge if they are using obsolete tools to do so?

I’m a real developer, got a degree and everything. I’ve been in the field for 11 years (since graduation, not counting pre-degree jobs), I don’t have a VS license and have no plans on getting one for the few Win projects I do off and on. Your remark is nowhere close to reality.

Check out any web dev conference, anything related to Python, PhP, Ruby, Rails, Django. Most of those developers have moved to OSX. Web apps has been the direction that in house development shops have been moving towards. Quite a few stayed with Win32 (or Java, but not pertinent to this conversation) to keep rich applications running on the desktop. With this move MS is forcing devs from the desktop. If they have to rewrite code are they going to go for the Windows only Metro route, or will they move to more web based apps?
For full disclosure other options are available too: Switch to Java or as a long shot move to OSX (a lot of small businesses are already switching, and a Mac Mini can be purchased for development for the same cost as a VS11 license).

WWDC is in a couple weeks, jump into any OSX or iOS thread that week and you’ll see the haters out in full force calling them both toy OS’s. (or you could just go to any old thread from any previous WWDC and just read them there).

^ THIS RIGHT HERE ^
That’s the issue. Most people have nothing against Metro, in the right circumstances — tablets and small form factor devices — it’s a great OS. However it doesn’t scale well. Lots of professionals need plenty of screen real estate and must use multiple app simultaneously. As a web dev I usually have multiple browsers (and multiple windows of each browser), Photoshop, Texteditors, FTP and Database clients all open at the same time. Metro’s 1 and 1/4 apps UI paradigm will never work for me. This move of removing desktop apps from the free version of VS as well as removing the compiler from the Windows SDK means that app devs will be pushed towards Metro, and as I stated, that will not work for me.

Of course people who use apps like Photoshop, Autocad, or even Visual Studio get left in the dust. Forced fullscreen apps are not the best solution for everything. On tablets, or small form factor devices, sure, but on my 27" hi-res monitor, not so much.

This article doesn’t mention it, but the Ars article he linked to does. Even the SDK has had the compiler removed. Starting with VS11 there is no way for anybody to write desktop apps without giving MS $500

Congratulations, are you sure this is the correct thread to be sharing that info though? This is a review of Diablo III, people reading it are looking for info on Diablo III. We all know about Steam sales and the upcoming release of TL2, you have shared zero new or relevant information. It’s just some anti-D3 rant that we’ve already heard dozens of times in the past week.
Also I didn’t get the game until a few days after release so no error 37 for me.

Thanks for sharing. I guess I should buy TL2 and play that as I wait for D3 to be released. Oh, wait… TL2 isn’t out yet and I want to play Diablo. How does your little anecdote help me?

I don’t know about short and small. I’m 10 hours in and only halfway through Act II on normal difficulty with my first character. I have lots to explore and do yet. This game will easily cost me less that a dollar an hour (which is the metric I use to judge a games value), and if the harder difficulties are as interesting as people say it appears it will only have cost me pennies per hour, thats good value.

No one has said a Mac isn’t a PC. However in certain contexts, the term PC is used to signify a Windows based machine. Historically IBM coined the term with their IBM Personal Computer advertised as the IBM PC (which ran DOS). It competed against Apple, Amiga and others. Eventually Compaq and others cloned the PC. About the same time the market dwindled to just Macs, and PC’s with PC’s having the vast market share. The term PC to mean a Windows machine is just the evolution of language. You are not special for being aware that all computers, even Mac’s are PC’s.

Why is that. Better battery life and less heat is still an advantage on a pro machine.

Whats consistent about Win8, that is my complaint with it. No consistency. There are two browsers with the same name, but different functionality. Some app switching is done through hot corners, others with the task bar or alt-tab. Metro and Desktop apps have zero design consistency between them.
Consistency is one thing that Win8 certainly does not have. You other two points, simplicity and user friendly are definitely MS’s goal, but I believe it’s the consistency that is going to be the problem.

I don’t think you know what anecdotal means. His comment never once mentioned his personal experience, the closest he comes is saying that he is confident in the product.

There is more to the lawsuit than being a rounded rectangle, that is one of a series of points on the complaint. For Samsung to be infringing they have to meet them all, your use of the rounded rectangle, while a good soundbite isn’t accurate in describing the facts of the case and just weaken any arguments you make.
