Has it missed any major upgrade yet? There isn’t that much difference between 4.0.2 and 4.0.4.

I’m sure the developers of the banned apps will be relieved to hear it’s all in their heads.

Regardless the point is moot, since the reason the app got pulled was because of improper use of APIs. It had nothing to do with a competing product.
Apple’s guidelines prohibit the use of non-public APIs. That’s APIs that are present in iOS, but are not part of the specification, so they can change in the next version of the system or disappear altogether. That’s why they’re prohibited, so that apps don’t suddenly break going from iOS version N to version N+1.
The app in question doesn’t use such APIs (or so the developers claim). What’s happening is Apple is broadening the definition to cover the use of their proprietary AirPlay protocol (which has nothing to do with any Apple APIs, the protocol has been reverse engineered and there are third part applications for other operating systems that make use of it).

How much do they make from each AirPlay device sold? In addition to that, every AirPlay device sold locks you into their ecosystem, so you’re more likely to buy an iPhone as your next phone, since you already have that fancy Denon receiver that’s compatible with it.

You think Apple rather collects licensing fees from third party vendors instead of selling you an iPhone/iPod touch as a receiver?
They already sold me an iPhone/iPod. They want to me to also buy an Apple-licensed AirPlay device, which I might not need to do, depending on the circumstances and the availability of apps such as the one they banned.
As for Kindle, I’m sure they considered it and decided they’d rather have people buying iPads to read Kindle books than people buying Kindles. It’s not like they have an obligation to remove all competing products. They just reserve the right to.

The point is, a calculator app doesn’t compete with Apple. People using third-party calculator apps doesn’t cost Apple money. People not buying Apple-licensed AirPlay hardware does.

The long and short of it, you make something that competes with Apple, you get kicked out of App Store.
