The video is available in several formats, using a silverlight and a html5 player. It’s the browsers job to support the common codecs(best trough os installed ones).

If that’s true, then I absolutely understand the claims… But I’m not sure if you are really not allowed to dynamically compile code, since the code only has the same permissions as it’s host. If so, then there should be a special permission for apps in need of using this feature.

I’d like to know what apis are actually missing for them. Can it be about performance? I don’t think so, DirectX is as native and low level as it gets. Other things?

They probably won’t be able to dynamicly load assemblies from the web I guess(Since they need to be verified). Still you can bündle with Flash or stuff and be fine.

For specific programming topics, Google yields better results for me. When searching more on normal less freaky things, bing seems to be little smarter. I think we can generalize this, bing has probably more data and more knowledge of relevance, while bing is more immersive on more general topics.

webkit != webkit or rather theres more to it like different js engines and stuff. I think as cutting edge as webkit is, it also has several rendering bugs in it. theres also gecko and trident and the opera one which are pretty good these days.

Their engine should be platform independent enough to not be dependent on win32 apis, the ui has to be reimplemented anyways.

There are some driver issues(for example ATI drivers), which can usually be resolved by installing the Win7 version of it.

That’s what I meant. It’s called Windows RT, WinRT is Windows Runtime which is a framework/runtime that metro apps use and run inside. Oh my I don’t know why they called it Windows RT

Don’t call it WinRT, it’s ambiguous with the Windows Runtime, which is something different.

Nothing to level the playing field, since they are already on the same level, they can do everything metro IE does and even more. They should absolutely kill desktop IE, but I think it’s a workaround for transitioning away from the world of plugins.

Depends on the environment and the kind of app. Tablet users are used to paying for all kind of trash apps. On desktop when they see Office or a game, why not buy it here instead to walk to a physical store. And when they see a little news reader app that looks nice, why not pay a few cents for it?

So true. There are no restrictions that would ever hurt a browser. How confusing would it be to have a chrome on ARM metro and as well ondesktop, what sense would that make? Chrome and FF would even have the advantage to allow plugins like flash inside of their metro browser, so they’d actually have more features than IE. I really can’t understand those concerns, I just cannot.

Dude, when a user starts windows, there is a big tile leading to the store. With great games and apps for free, installed in seconds, so who would not prefer that over googling for ‘free games’ or whatever?
