For me personally, the internet has provided a means for conversation with people I would have otherwise lost touch with. I’m able to facebook message my friend in Minneapolis about what’s been on my mind lately in a timely fashion, or share a song with my friend in Vermont who I won’t see for another three months. These things wouldn’t be able to happen without the internet.

I actually feel like I would be more of a “hermit” without the internet, at least socially. I would be confined to my local friends, which is a much smaller circle than everyone I know and want to keep up with.

Sure there’s the addicting, time-wasting, nonsense internet. But there’s also the sober, useful, practical internet, and I try to use the internet as a tool for relaxation and communication with the these traits in mind.

I think there are good ways to balance your time so that the internet can be used as a mental “getaway”, like TV, newspaper, books, sports, walk in the park, etc. As far as knowledge goes, it may be overwhelmingly useless in some places, less so in others. But I don’t think it has to be useless in general.
