Yeah I actually don’t see how it’s misleading. “Walked away” is not synonymous with “stole,” as far as I know.

We would happily use YouTube as our video product (which would still live on our video hub), except for the fact that it would be completely untenable for us from an ad sales perspective given the kinds of revenue splits and deals which Google offers. The numbers just don’t work.
I am fully aware that our video tool is not perfect, and I can tell you that we are working with our provider (Ooyala) every day to improve it. And that includes reducing the amount of ads you’re seeing, investigating ad skipping options, and striving to make the player work well on every platform.
I know it’s the internet and it’s more than I can expect, but it would be nice if you actually assumed we wanted to do the best thing possible for users, instead of suggesting we didn’t care. Believe me, we’re working our asses off the improve everything about the site for you guys, and every day we struggle with how to provide the best experience while keeping the lights on and growing what we do. It’s a lot to ask, but try having a small bit of faith in us!

I feel like I’ve answered the “vision” question in other parts of this thread, but if it helps you to understand what we’re doing, I see The Verge as being much more akin to something like Wired rather than something like Engadget. We’re not planning on becoming a general purpose news site, and I don’t think we have that much in common with Mashable. There seems to be a lot of fear about us reducing our technology coverage, but the only thing we want to reduce is the amount of useless noise that’s out there.
We had a week of insane news that wasn’t strictly about technology. It’s one week — look at the rest of what we do all year round. I think you will find a very healthy mix of stories.
As for movie reviews (and any kind of review for that matter), we’ll do them when we think something is interesting. You can see we’ve been doing them for awhile (http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/15/3244767/film-review-robot-and-frank). As to why you would want to read our review versus someone else’s? Well, we like to think we have a voice and an attitude that is different than other publications.

I didn’t mean it in a mean way! I wish we could cover more, but we just don’t have the staff. We cover stuff when we think we can be effective, but trying to do even more “global” coverage would stretch us thin.

No. It wouldn’t be safe to say that in any way.
We obviously want more people to read what we write, but not at the expense of quality. There are many sites that are designed to go after as many “clicks” as possible; sites with multi-page slideshows or numerous “10 best” lists. Sites that sneakily aggregate other people’s work. It should be obvious what a site that is driven by pageview milking (as we call it) looks like. And it should be similarly clear that The Verge is not such a site.
We could do this a lot cheaper and a lot faster. There’s a reason we don’t.

I don’t think we have any interest in being a “general” news site, nor do I think we’ve exhibited such a desire. Helping people find content easier, YES!

I would say my answers are yes, but I will also say this:
I am not a fan of saying you’re going to do something, or talking about how great what you’re going to do is. I believe that the work should speak for itself, and one shouldn’t have to prepare people or excite people about the work unnaturally. So I have an aversion to talking about what we want to be or what we plan to be, or how we’re going to get there. I would rather just do it.
