But the platform needs more than 1st tier national carriers. There are the 2nd tier national carriers and every single local carrier that has yet to adopt the platform.

As someone who currently works at a wireless carrier I would never, ever pick a dedicated hot spot over a smartphone unless you have money to burn.
The speeds are usually the same. Phone tethering gives you the flexibility to tether via wifi, USB, or even bluetooth. With phone tethering the only thing you’d have to manage is your data usage depending on the carrier.
Wireless hotspots are also really cheaply made and I see them break constantly.

I think one of the first major steps would be to have a windows phone available on all carriers, especially in the US. At least 1. Right now that’s not the case.

And it can only be used on….. 2% of phones and has no web app, and can be used on OSX / linux.
