I’m blown away by Alan’s story about almost becoming an astronaut only to then move to Boeing.
If only because it EXACTLY fits what Neil DeGrasse Tyson has been saying about a mission to Mars. I’ve heard NDT talk several times about how it’s not exciting for students to think they might design the next airfoil for a commercial airliner, but if you tell them they might design the airfoil for a Martian lander – that’s what gets them going!
So here we have the CEO of Ford telling us that it was exactly that situation that affected his life’s trajectory 50 years ago.

Of course 74% of people aren’t planning on adopting a mobile payment system! Right now there is only one phone on sale in the United States (the Galaxy Nexus) that actually has NFC and Google Wallet. How many people even know it exists? I still get approached by fascinated onlookers when they see me use my GN to pay at a 7-11. Even if you include systems like LevelUp, the market penetration can’t be more than a few percent of the total population.
We can debate the relative merits of mobile payment systems, but the implication of this survey that people aren’t interested in the idea is spurious. As Henry Ford once said, “If I had asked my customers what they wanted they would have said a faster horse.”
