If Apple are going to increase resolution I’d predict it will be 960×1440. It’s the only value that works nicely with how the iOS API manages scaling. When iOS added support for higher resolution screen what used to be pixel co-ordinates became points combined with a scaling factor. The iPhone 4 uses a scaling factor of 2 so an app renders at 320×480 but is scaled to 640×960. If the iPhone 5 used a scaling factor of 3 such an app would naturally scale to 960×1440.
They could just alter the aspect ratio and have more pixels in a single dimension, but I’d think it’s unlikely. The iPad and iPhone do have this difference, but I think adding a third aspect ratio would add a bit too much of a headache for developers trying to create universal apps.
