typing this on my oppo5 i can say oppo sure makes nice devices but hardware buttons pull it down, android just feels second rate. its the sole reason it wont replace my n4.

I couldn’t. For a time. HTC basically produced a flagship phone, i believe it was the OneX? And lost it to Apple, they lost an entire season because of an import ban. When the ban was lifted the devices were shelved because people had their flagships already (S3). That was such a blow that it partly caused their demise. They are trying to get up again but no one knows if they can succeed.
As for your Samsung link, don’t throw clichés at me. Samsung is just as despicable. These companies can pull this shit because their customers stand for it or even defend it. I even like IOS, i love apples vision and them standing for their ideal come what will, but i do not easily cope with their lying, stealing and using courts to destroy competition.

they all know jonathan ivy, they all knew scott forestall. i have yet to meet an android user that knows who matias duarte is. even on theverge very few seem to be interested in that, mainly because the editors are pushing it. fact is, 95% of all android users have not seen or tried google android.
of course ios users appreciate more. they primarily buy because they agree with apples vision and they are willing to make compromises for that. tell an android user he can’t have an sd slot, or must cope with a shitty skin. watch the reaction. the android buyer is in for specs, he couldn’t care less about android. and at some point that will obviously change how google deals with android.

thats what i fear as well. people have shown them absolutely no appreciation whatsoever. oems like samsung and htc take his work, trash it and replace it with mindless skins.
at some point they just have to realize that they have gotten the pedestrians, the majority of their userbase has no culture. question is do they try to convince valuable customers, im looking at the ios crowd, or do they submit to samsung fully and reduce work on android to a technical minimum, bugs and performance.

thats not android thats samsung and touchwizz. apple, like an asshole, tried to lump google android, its perceived atomic warfare archenemy, into this by adding the galaxy nexus – but luckily they lost that one. samsung got the bill and they probably deserved it.

whats wrong with you. a giggle, are you even for real. apple banned my phone because of slide to unlock, which ridiculously enough didn’t resemble it at all. apple pretty much killed htc for similar nonsense, blocking their devices in the hot season.
i do think the entire IP debate is one big moloch, they should all copy each other as much as they want.
i do care when they start to harm others by litigation and apple did that well enough. so i can kind of understand people get pissed now when they apple goes and replicates android shamelessly after years of court battles and accusations.

i can imagine going flat was a littlebit too frightening to them so they had to compensate with gausblur and nutty rainbow colors. underneath it all this could very well turn into the most polished OS out there, though. i take it this is just a beta and seeing the outrage thats hitting them they should be inclined to tone it down quite a bit.
as for android, jellybean is old, and it looks old. new google apps basically added a sidedrawer and some actionbar magic but that doesnt account for much at all, these apps still use outdated fragments and look underpowered. google now is pretty much the only app that really stands out. its a piece of art.
don’t get me wrong, i adore the stuff that duarte does, but he himself claimed jellybean wasn’t even half his vision so i hope for a DRASTIC update because android really does not look as polished as people claim.

you should, because you obviously dont know android. there are so many concepts which they took it would be hard to count it. not that it matters, but this is heavily inspired by android. i dont see any wp in it at all.

it’s not just you. Some sort of crazy fever has befallen people making them all of the sudden worry about one of the most basic human traits I could think of, advancement through imitation. not to mention these are just companies.

jellybam is a scam to extort money. they got banned for this. there are alternatives like pac that have honest motives. the only reason jellybam exists is money. xda kicked them for creating hundreds of topics of which they could maintain none but collected cash from users who thought that broken mess is gonna get better with donations.

cm is the rom that is furthest from stock in the entire scene. no other rom comes even close. they replace google apps and services with their own stuff, no other rom does this. touchwiz and sense do. they merge things that break UI/UX in half, some of it would cause a matias duarte nightmares.
its not really a bad thing as they have their own direction – but that weird crazy myth has to stop because its that silly. i am certain people who say this havent seen or used stock at all..

i don’t get people like you. i want to, but i can’t.
i’ve been born in the DDR, east germany. they spied on everyone in the interest of “public safety.” they locked my dad away, just like that. my dad was an artist critical of the regime and he could have spread propaganda – so they thought, that was enough to put him away without trial for two years. stasi was a joke, the tactics they employed were laughable at best. what we had back then were just castles in the sand. NSA spying on everyone is another league entirely.
now how do you benefit if they lock this modest, well spoken, unselfish persona away? why are you so opposed to human traits like curiosity and courage? he’s had the clearance, he swore an moral oath, but does his conscience not count at all? should he just go on eroding democracy, stripping you and everyone else of their natural and constitutional rights because he signed a paper?

color calibration, yours is uncalibrated. with proper calibration the n4s panel is one of the best looking out there. it makes my gorgeous oppo find5 1080 lcd pale.
battery life, Google’s kernel does have wakelocks and the improvements are quite drastic.
performance, stock gives you about 15-16.000 in antutu, a rom gives you 22.000 out of the box because they include the newest toolchains and vendor drivers/optimizations. stock is often outdated.
the rest is obvious. features. hybrid, pie, halo, theming engine, toggles, customization overall. hybrid taps into an entire world of apps that you couldn’t have otherwise. pie allows you to play games fullscreen without losing navigation, halo is Android only multitasking solution, theming engine can customize everything, even apps.
what you should take into account, nexus roms base on aosp. there is no hacking involved like on other platforms. what you get is essentially stock android with faster updates and more features.

I doubt it. usually Android gets faster when Google updates it, caf and linaro did optimize aosp but that’s mostly good for benchmarks and does not have much impact on regular use. that Apple has anything to do with it is ridiculous. as for Samsung, their phone would not lag if it weren’t for them screwing up aosp touchwizz.
Comment
oh the irony. users with a rotten old galaxy nexus can install more games than possible on this superphone which most people explicitly got for sd storage. 7GB for touchwizz is absolutely nuts. and again, they use marketing tricks to fool their customers, all apps use the data partition, without the ability to move that to the sd as well its pretty much useless. apps just use a couple of mb, its the data that weights it down. not to mention that loading up apps like that will be slow as heck.

well you wanna get into it and explain how exactly the ios design is not even close as you say?
what you see there is still the old design, with a few touches. for comparisation, this was gmail as we knew it

i like the new sidebar, too and theres little things here and there that make it look better, but it really isn’t such a leap now. the ios variant makes use of the new design seen in g+, gmusic, etc.

tech enthusiast … that’s put too nicely dude, let’s agree on gear/spec head. i wouldn’t call someone an ethusiast for technology that disregards software, coping with a ton of spam and eye scorching execution to the point of bogging the whole device down, even in terms of speed, taking it up with lag because, in theory, its processsor “should” make an impact.

for gesture typing swype is the best i have tried and i tried tons. swiftkey was ok, but it cannot produce such effortless swiping and accuracy. the only reason i used it was because swype was in a pretty rough beta and looked awful – now that its officially on play and has a holo theme i didn’t hesitate installing it.

don’t be so dense. if you have friends with apple devices you know their apps are better, they have games you dont have, they have a+++ titles for which you wait years, if they ever come out on android at all. there is no denying it, apple has a great eco system and google is not quite there yet. you must think developers are stupid – they go where they can get the most revenue & earnings of course.

i doubt it, you must have seen something else, because the ios version does have a better design/looks more pleasing to the eye.
the only thing that actually changed are the colored boxes, gmail had that sidebar for years now. i had it like this running on my phone even.

numbers mean nothing. you want quality apps and fresh titles and as it stands androids eco system is far from being up to par – yet.

i read ubuntu is going to allow carriers/users to theme the OS by implemention system level theming. that means a company with bad taste like samsung can screw up the design wihout breaking the OS in half and causing any havok, fragmentation for instance. users could reverse that of course and even apply their own themes. android has that feature, but only in the rom scene – which doesn’t matter.

that company is hopeless. i put together crap like this in lunchbreak. the layout is laughable, the fonts, the style, the icons(!!), the colors, no love for detail at all. its one ugly mess. i always wonder why, if they have to skin, don’t get actual designers. they shouldn’t just fetch some underpaid java programmer from the cellar to do the job – the company makes billions, why save money on something like that.

a little bit inconsistent. you took parts from ios, sense, touchwiz and duarte and mixed them up. have yet to see a mockup though that is up there with holo, especially the new breed thats bleeding into JB through new apps google and otherwise. i think android is perfectly fine going that way, there should not a need to skin it at all. what they should do maybe is implement an API theming layer to counteract fragmentation.

im sorry but have you seen where google is heading with holo? google now, gmusic, etc. people say sense has gotten “better” because its getting closer to stock but this

has still a good deal of gingerbread in it. it is still leages away from stock.
not to mention that holo is androids platform language. every single respectable new app thats coming out is holo. why in the world would you want to conflict that for no reason at all.

Now that Nexus HTC One is official, Isn’t it essentially just a 4MP camera or am I understanding this incorrectly? What is an ultrapixel without Sense?
htc one is essentially “just” a 4mp camera and that’s precisely what makes it get better results. less pixels mean more light sensitivity = higher quality low level pictures. a 5000 $ pro dslr with a sensor as big as a baby fist has less pixels than a samsung flagship – because they don’t target idiots. there’s no “ultrapixel,” its basically marketing drivel because they need to compete against the others who lure people with big numbers but what HTC does here is still the right thing to do.
btw. stock android has nothing to do with the quality of your pictures. the camera app is the only thing thats included in stock. everything else is provided by the vendor, hardware drivers and proprietary blobs.
20 days ago on Should I worry about the camera on a stock Android HTC One without Sense?

it would be the death of android as we know it. android would turn into a cutthroat market like any other where carriers and manufacturers get full control and use it to stop any form of innovation before they haven’t squeezed out the last penny out of your pockets. look at the dslr market for instance. they maintain such markets by closing them, making them into walled gardens – that is why nexus is your only hope of a sane mobile landscape. it is actually the first commercial market that i know that has mainstream appeal and is still open. if that were different, and it will be considering that you represent the majority of android buyers, you will pay through the nose for anything, thethering, wifi hotspot, gps, etc. just like in the golden days.
as for your manufacturers not releasing updates, it would directly translate into a sales deficiency. cutting the OS loose from the mainline means they can literally make you buy their incremental hardware updates because that is your only chance of getting up to date. they will release updates when most of their customers have already switched to the newest offering. don’t even think they need half a year or longer to get up to date.
and again, look at the dslr market, same thing. canon was caught red handed, activating features that were in their firmware for more than 10 years one by one, monthly dslr by dslr. what makes android so special is that it just goes on. unfortunately no one gives a fuck.

i’ve seen the web grow since i’ve been a kid. it has not changed much. people then said the same thing you say now, “eventually.” but aren’t you tired?
i just don’t understand how you willfully dive into a broken mess that is web technology, coping with so many shortcomings that you simply can’t play down for an unkept promise or some kind of wild ideology that couldn’t be further from the truth.
apps did in 3 years what web couldn’t do in almost a decade. nothing that runs in the browser on my fancy desktop pc can even dream of keeping up performance- and UI-wise compared to whats running on my silly little smartphone. new technologies like intents have proven that you don’t need fixed in stone standards. new languages reduce the overhead down to 90%, we target the latest tech, have access to the latest knowledge – why ignoring all this progress and going back to 1990?
