Billionaires hate socialism … until they benefit. Salary caps in the NFL, revenue sharing, gov’t funding of stadiums, laws to create legal monopolies and control copyrights and, then huge money to watch the games you already paid for! You vill buy Fox News und ESPN or you get NOTHING!

It looks like pricing is a problem, which I thought might be the case. My Chromebook runs atom, and it doesn’t perform well. Hardly any point in x86 tablets if they can’t run Windows programs well.
And the convertible? Destined to a niche business market, at best. Maybe I’ll be wrong, but Dell sounds like these will get premium pricing, and that’s what’s killing all the tablet makers. When an ipad is only $500, how do you compete with that? And why get a convertible if an ultrabook + ipad is cheaper and nearly as portable and can be used by two people?

The ipod was hardly a big seller, neither was Mac OSX, neither was Windows 1.0. If no one built on failures, the tech industry wouldn’t exist. Hell, MS’s entire philosophy for new markets is to fail for a while until they figure it out and the incumbent leaves an opening. Seems to work pretty well for them.

You’ve not offered any evidence that they’re worse than a random stranger. No one could guess at the magnitude of Apple’s success, even Apple. I don’t think analysts are any smarter than I am, but they do have better tools and more time to analyze, so I still default to their opinions over random internet strangers. Yes, they focus on easily predicted quarterly results rather than meaningful long term predictions, that’s their business and it has positives and negatives. Yes, they have their own biases and incentives, but so do random internet strangers. That hardly makes them worse. Yes, they are less valuable than the ‘old day’s (isn’t everyone?) and I disagree with them often and they’re certainly wrong sometimes, I never said otherwise.
If you feel you have a better success rates listening to comments in blog posts, feel free to do so, but you’ve done nothing to prove to me that it’s wiser, and you yourself admit they have more time and resources to do this. Statistically, they’re better than a ‘random replacement commenter’. I’m making no naive assumption of competence on anyone’s part, I’m playing the odds.
And the comment I replied to? It called these full-time paid analysts morons, which is clearly not the case. It’s an indefensible statement and you know it. Clearly if they’re making plausible statements to pump up specific stock prices to profit from such activity they aren’t morons, they’re criminals.

Sorry, most adults have work PCs for MS Office. Or second, third or fourth PCs. You’re right about photos – though most people just use phones now I suppose. This can’t be a primary device unless you’re very limited in needs.
I don’t know why you’d need more than 8 hours battery life. That’s nearly as good as a smartphone. How can you be away from outlets that long? I run my chromebook off and on all day and never run out, months after purchase. I do have lots of other options, to be clear (phone nook xbox roku home pc work pc itouch ipods).
I highly recommend the series 5 for build quality. It is a little pokey for games, and, as I said, for specific scenarios.

I’ve used it as a 2nd PC and loved it. No hassle, long battery life, no maintenance. I got the series 5, though I have had an issue with the plastic around the charger cord breaking when my wife dropped it. Still, works just fine, and I only have to charge it at night, so the loose cord is no biggie.
It wasn’t good for traveling (docs and such are a hassle), but I have a work laptop for that myself. If you’re tire of admining another PC or worried about infections (I got infected on both my PCs despite Windows defenders and strong passwords and the like) it’s the best way to go.

Think about the ‘extra’ $150 as money that won’t be spent on geek squad, or time wasted fixing something or time wasted on installs, setups, viruses, etc. It’s totally worth it for the less capable. This, or jump up to an ipad/imac. Wintel isn’t worth the trouble anymore. You’re paying less up front for massively more time wasted and money wasted.

I know you’re trolling, but wth. Windows is a much bigger waste of my time, that’s why I only have one wintel pc. Chromium is maintenance and headache-free. This isn’t for ‘most consumers’ it’s for schools, businesses and for people like me, who don’t mind spending a little dough for one less headache.

Ok, it’s not about specs. The Xbox 360 has been a horribly underpowered PC for years, but I turn it on and it works and does one thing passably well: gaming.
Chromium is like that. It does secure and simple browsing better than anything else, even for idiots who don’t know anything about viruses.

I think the community angle will get better as … wait for it … we lose literacy.
Yes, technology has progressed to the point where we don’t have to communicate with keyboard. That, plus our current economic inequality will lead to lower and lower standards enforced and less public investment (already has if you look at the prevalance of Spanish). Less literacy is going to be a technological development, cheap pictures and videos mean it’s just not necessary anymore.
And then we’ll all be talking face to face again, more and more via TVs.

If the analysts made bad predictions, lots of very rich people would lose money and they wouldn’t be employed any longer. They generally know more about the industry than most people, would you care to offer any evidence on why I should think they, with full-time paid analyst positions, are morons, but a random stranger on the Internet is smart enough to know better?
How is Dell going to do this holiday season in Enterprise? Will HP recover? Who buys RIM? How long does Nokia have? Go ahead, give it a shot, make a full-on blog and link to it if you want. Show us how smart you are and maybe I’ll believe you when you dismiss others with no evidence.

I’m pretty sure Dell is stronger on Enterprise services.
Plus, a billion dollars worth of layoffs, including in enterprise services, looks a hell of a lot worse than Dell’s results.
It’s ironic that they complain about Hurd cutting to the bone, but he delivered and he bought WebOS that could have been developed into something meaningful. Instead, they’re having record layoffs. No doubt Meg will do a nice stock buyback for their poor millionaire investors after record layoffs. That’s the way the economy works now.

Typing on a Dell, you’re just ignorant and out of date. Apple products aren’t overpriced per spec. Plus, a usable Unix-based system with better security than a Windows PC (yes, i’ve heard all about Mac OSX’s supposed vulnerabilities, but in practice they cost less to maintain for regular users).
Apple makes a lot of money because they add value and no one else can be bothered. There are multiple luxury car makers and yet only one PC maker bothers with OS development. There’s a reason Apple makes profits and out of all the PC makers, they deserve it. They don’t just slap crap together by the lowest bidder and outsource everything to the nth degree. What value does HP add to the PC market? Exclusive deals with retailers, and that’s pretty much it.

No, this isn’t tablet talk. They’re adding touchscreens to everything, so his costs just shot up on the entire lineup.
I’m confused, if Intel can subsidize ultrabooks, why isn’t MS subsidizing Windows 8? I mean, seriously, why is Dell eating all this profit to push touchscreens onto devices that might not sell?

Nonsense. I just want ESPN3. That should cost $20, fine. That’s $40 less than what they’re charging AND my money won’t go to Rupert Murdoch or Fox News.
I pay for a few TV shows now, honestly. I know I’m not normal, but neither is cable’s pricing tiers. It’s just monopoly bundling, it’s anti-consumer and it’s indefensible. They have the technology to give us better pricing, but they’re using it to fight things like ESPN3 which were offered ‘over the top’. And Comcast is now fighting the internet as a whole, by treating their on-demand services differently.
The greed would be incredible if I hadn’t watched the banking collapse lead to a gov’t bailout of billionaires, followed by the same billionaires whining about taxes and rules that ‘get in their way’. This is a democracy, it’s time the people act like it.

Yet ESPN3 was offered with internet access deals, not with channel bundles. Until Time Warner got involved, of course. Time Warner has no intention of selling me ESPN for less than $60+ bundle. I don’t want to send my money to all those other people, it’s an ethical issue. I don’t want to subsidize the false prophet of gold, Fox News. People shouldn’t be forced to pay for all this crap they don’t want, AND get commercials AND pay a ridiculous amount based on where you live (my parents get everything plus DVR for half what they want to charge me extra). It’s ridiculous.

The terrible thing is, he ‘s completely wrong. There is NO competition for the vast majority of Americans. I’m glad as a rich technocrat in DC he sees broadband competition, but that’s not reality.
He would HAVE to change the rules to get broadband competition. Tiered pricing for these regional monopolies only results in more money for the millionaires that run these companies, less for small businesses and the working classes. This is a terrible thing to hear from a so-called Democrat administration.
Where’s the competition in politics? We have two pro-millionaire, anti-gov’t parties, and no pro-working class party. We have all the votes, what is going on?

Yes, but that can change. Apples aren’t as global as MS, but we talk about them all the time. And clearly B&N will do something with their partnership with MS.
I like the Nook ST, and it works great with Calibre, btw. Amazon’s hardware is wildly inconsistent, for example, the kindle can rotate pdfs, but the kindle touch can’t. The touch and keyboard can play audio, but not the kindle. They can do pdfs and mobis but not epubs. They have a cheezy faux chrome finish. I was still tempted, because amazon’s software is so much better, sure. Their lending library is a little easier than the public library, but I think the selection is pretty much the same.
And no one has figured out periodicals. All these content providers charge the same price on ereaders for less content than their free websites. Which is why Calibre is so essential, even if you can afford content, you can’t get it. ereaders could very well just disappear the way this is going. I love the nook, but the business is messed up. They need to give these away with subscriptions to newspapers or magazines, because the pricing is just silly right now.
