Hi Op, I mean in design wise, MSFT can go all out to revamp desktop. They do not need to be afraid their gigantic base user will piss off. Because those user will just stick with Win7. (like most of them stick with XP)
Re-imagine desktop in Metro perspective. Or even introduce a new design for workbench or productive computing. Thanks for reading :)

Nokia making Xbox … that is quite an imaginative . However why would MSFT / Nokia want to do it? Can Nokia help to bring down the price of an awesome console …. a $99/- Xbox 8 will 16 Core + quad GPU ….
If they can, I do hope Nokia is making Xbox 8. :)

Windows team Not bold enough. They should have go all the way, because they have Windows 7 to fall back on if Windows 8 failed. This is the version most people in public expect to be lukewarm release.
This is the break for them to go really wild. They should have made really drastic change to the Desktop / Workbench mode :)

For frequently used documents or continue unfinished work.

Smaller Launcher like start menu or pinned program @ taskbar is better way to launch program. Because one can launch another application without loosing view of current work.
I also use start menu to access recent open file. A lazy + quick way to access frequently used document and continue in-progress work.

Maybe theoutermost might have a point.
However current desktop allow us to watch a news video, write an article or take down notes or analyze that video at the same time. We can also launch Skype, using menu while live video is still running at the side.
Basically Desktop can handle more parallel task as compare to fruit phone. Launching apps on Win7 will not affect data stream. Win8 DP / CP start screen block view and disrupt the chain of thoughts.
It is alright for IOS because user perceive phone as less powerful. MSFT might not have that luxury.

I think MSFT still need to be mindful of the transition between the 2 paradigms.
Going from Metro to Desktop is still alright, since most users are familiar with desktop paradigm.
Going from Desktop to Metro might be better if it is a 2 steps transition. Example pressing Start key will not throw user into a full screen, chromeless environment.
if Win8 detect a mouse. They can display a menu size version of start screen. if user want to go Metro, they can pinch zoom or pan that ‘start menu’ to the top and it will expand to current Win8 CP start screen …
Beside ‘fast’ and fluid, I hope Win8 can also be smooth and natural. Cheers

imagine Coca-cola / Coke selling wine. Nike sell soft drink. IKEA sell sport shoe … etc.
Successful Brand tends to have a clear identity, something which one can associate that name with.
Example
high tech sportware … you would think of …
online shopping you would think of …
Never walk alone …. you would think of ….
When you need to name a country related to Freedom … you would said …
Xbox is MSFT brand, they do whatever they want to with it. However I think their inabilities to understand brand is sad. It is similiar to their lateness in recognising design and UX is important (think of winMo). ID is part of design.

I love my Zune HD, even though I do not have access to Zune service. I am still using it everyday and weekly to listen to TheVerge cast.

Brand is success because that brand has an Identity. They can try to re-brand Xbox as the brand for Entertainment however that move away from its initial ‘soul’.
It will not be easy. It is easier to build from zero.
It is like turning swatch watches to smoothie blender … even selling swatch to Rolex buyer will going to take lots of resources, to communicate and shift mindset.
I understand Xbox is not that famous, so maybe they feel that they have a chance against NetFlix, Amazon, Spotify … etc in entertainment space.
When user access the PC / Tablet, They will look for Xbox to get movie … etc.

I hope my tablet will have a bit of the Surface technology, example ‘pixel sense’.
If MSFT want to leap frog everyone, they can also throw in a strip down version of light space. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx5kBqxyaHE&feature=g-user-u
That would complete my 2012 tech dream. ;)

Why not just name it Microsoft music …. since they have a Microsoft store and Microsoft ID?
Company spend lots of money to establish a brand, tarnishing a brand is just wasteful. Anyway Steve Job is not around to compete, so I think it might be alright for everyone to slack off.
Let see what MSFT has for E3 2012.

Branding is more than a name and few advertisements. Conventional marketing people make this mistake is alright. But MSFT is against Apple. They need to be better.
Although there is not many Nike / Apple marketing people in this world. That is not an excuse not to study their work. Sad ….

It is a sad day for Xbox branding. The music and movies stuff diluted its soul. (even thought we know it is coming .. it still feel bad)
Xbox started off as gaming, famous for its shooters. Gamers can associate with that brand. Xbox resonates toughness, cunning, playfulness and bad ass attitude.
Then they started to put in cute avatar, start closing studio … etc.. Now they associate Xbox to music. It will not be a easy transition.
Killing off the soul of a brand, is like killing the brand. When it means nothing, hearts cannot feel it. And they will slowly leave. Zune’s soul is about Music, its community is about music. They kill it off.
Instead of growing a movie branding. They decided to kill off 2 good brandings. Sad.

oh dear. MSFT xbox team has lost it if they decide to put browser on 360 now, after all this years and requests. It will not be a compiling experience, reading text 10 feet away.
Unless one can ‘pull’ the content closer, while keeping the display equipment 10 feet away…..
Why don’t they just build another apps on Xbox to render related media, video, sound or pictures, from those search site? Implement Win8 contract like feature … so that relevant app will apear to serve the user. Example search result is a youtube video, youtube will be presented as an optoin to render it.
Since this is reported by Tom, i think they might really put IE9 on xbox … sad.

Glad that OP is excited for MSFT ecosystem.
Health n Fitness service as a platform is quite a nice idea. It might be cooler to take picture of the meal and service recognize and register those food.
Maybe Nike+ will like OP idea too.

There are tons of cool stuff from MS research.
However the one using Doppler effect, gave me weird feeling, that user is chasing away cyber flies/mosquito from their laptop …. ;)
I think ebook reader might welcome this tech. Since it might feel natural to flip ebook pages with this tech.

noted op suggestion to;
1) split the type volume control
2) filter such as category for our apps.
3) map as lock screen
4) change tile setting at start menu
……..ETC
Interesting. I like the map as lock screen. nice work OP.
As for item 4, I prefer buttons for choosing different start arrangement, so that I can the right start screen for respective occasion. //example at work or at home will have different start.

Tim Cook and Steve J childhood do not have Transformer cartoon. Thus they do not understand the appeal of having a Toaster + Fridge as one entity. I am sure a robot + truck as one will likely blow their mind :)
