As a sidenote, i believe The Verge’s target audience is really enthusiastic tech enthuasists, early adopters and people who uses social media as their primary media. This is very very different from Engadget as they are getting pageviews from very broad spectrum of audience who just likes to read some gadget news from time to time. The Verge’s very definitive audience is simply a valuable thing for many advertisers. I think this is an important part of their business model.

Chat heads seems a good idea for social contacts. I might enjoy having whatsapp/sms/twitter notifications popping up as chat heads rather than the current notification system.
