It would need a bigger battery to power the display. To not see a drop in performance it would also need a better processor, which would need better cooling and again would need more battery.

They are advertising the MacBook Airs as having 12 hour battery life today. I’m pretty sure that would be illegal if that wasn’t true unless the buyer waited 4/5 months and then paid for a OS upgrade.
“With OS X Mavericks, your Mac works even smarter. Energy-saving technologies help you get more out of your battery”
OS X Mavericks isn’t out yet, I’m not sure what the confusion is.

The new airs are already out, and they come with OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.4, the same as the old MacBook Airs. Apple went through all the battery improvements that Mavericks contains on Monday, but Mavericks isn’t out until the autumn.

The display would have been more expensive and would have cut battery life, and it would have performed poorly. The 13 inch MBP can barely handle the retina display and that is more powerful the the MBA. Stick a retina display in the air and what you end up with is the 13 inch MBP.

Nope, the more efficient OS (Mavericks) isn’t out for another few months. When Mavericks comes out I expect that 12 hours will increase.

Exactly, the MacBook Air is popular because it is cheap (relative to Apple’s other laptops) lightweight, thin and has excellent battery life. If they put in a retina display it would be more expensive, with lower battery life and be thicker. That laptop already exists; it’s called the 13 inch MacBook Pro.

I hope so, I want these displays without the frame rate issues we’ve had so far.

I’m interested in knowing how it performs powering that high res display with a ULV processor and integrated graphics.

Yes this is what I meant.
This display is 140ppi, which is higher than most displays today (I think the 27 inch iMac is ~110ppi) it would be uncomfortable to use for most people if the OS just displayed everything at their native size.

But it’s over 30 inches. People don’t use 30 inch 1080p monitors.

Err yes. You will have 4 times as much space as a 1080p display.
You can have dozen of windows open all on the same screen at their normal size with no overlapping.
