I believe they use the quantum property of entanglement and have found a way to transmit 1 of an entangled pair to point B at (near) the speed of light.

And because the property of destroying altering the state of a quantum particle as soon as it is observed, we can be reliably sure it has not been tampered with in the process of transmission.

In telecommunications its both, a gigabit can signify the capacity as well as the transfer rate.
