Look at the above screenshot, from CDKII, for “Austin”. It states, “Invite via SMS” with the phone number beside it.
Pretty apparent that an SMS is going to be sent.

Do you use Path or have you tried to see for yourself? If not, it seems like you’re just blindly following this article about a guy that didn’t read what he was doing when he signed up for a social networking site.
cdkii shows it best with his screenshot below.
Tip of the day: If an app is asking for permission to use your contacts, then it’s probably going to use them.

Disclaimer, I use Path and didn’t unintentionally spam anyone
User complains that Path contacted his entire address book after he uninstalled the app.
Headline should read, “Man installed Path and authorized it to spam all of his contacts by failing to pay attention”.
Path is spamming address books with unwanted texts and robocalls — again
Title, but then…
Path doesn’t call users; the robocalls were an unintended consequence, possibly due to extra carrier services that turn text messages to landlines into phone calls
Sorry Adrianne, you do great work at the Verge, but the titling on this “news” is a bit misleading.
