Question to all who pose the “kernel” argument (maybe I am missing something here). I understand that maybe its tricky to do a kernel upgrade and retain all your current info, saved games, etc. But how does a kernel upgrade, stop you at the worst case scenario, to completely wipe your device clean and install a new ROM on it? It’s not like a kernel is something embedded in the device’s hardware.

Continuing from my previous reply, here is an example so you don’t say I am being vague. Someone posted a site called TechnoBuffalo above as being fairly objective, and decided to give it a go (haven’t heard about it before). Surprise surprise, a few articles down on the first page: Nokia Lumia 900 Earns Top Buy Rating From Consumer Reports (http://www.technobuffalo.com/companies/nokia/nokia-lumia-900-earns-top-buy-rating-from-consumer-reports/). Surprisingly, this never appeared on The Verge. Actually a challenge for all people that agree with you, is to find a negative story on Microsoft/Nokia/WP7 that didn’t show up on this site. I am serious. That would be an interesting experiment.

I just scrolled to the bottom and happened to see your post. I will say that I agree with the OP and understand where he is coming from. Maybe there is no bias in the classic sense, but Microsoft is definitely held to “higher standards” than other companies. Whereas in everything let’s say Apple releated, the glass is always half-full, for Microsoft it’s always half-empty.
If you don’t visit any pro-Microsoft sites, maybe it’s not easy to see what I’m saying. When you visits those sites though, you can see that on some days, there are actually positive stories for Microsoft floating around. Granted, they are pro-Microsoft sites, but even there, some of the stories can be trusted as objective (depending on source, content, etc). You rarely see such stories show up on The Verge, whereas things like “Skype removed from the Lumia 610” immediately pop up.
Having said that, I’m still here because I’m not aware of any better alternatives.

You can freak out about whatever you want, but it still remains a stupid conclusion. Also you are misinformed. Challenge of the day: find me 1 single official statement, where Microsoft says that carriers can block up to 1 update. Oh wait.. it doesn’t exist because it’s garbage spewed out by the same people that say that none of the existing device will get Apollo.

I haven’t read any comment but what’s theh point of this thread? Mozilla can already make a Metro browser for Win RT, and they said they will. The whole crying thing is for making a desktop browser for Win RT, for which Microsoft said no (like for any app other than Office).

Regarding WP7 updates, shouldn’t that “sometimes” be changed to “always”? He said that Mango won’t be out until 2012, and he said that Tango will come in 2 updates: Tango 1 & 2. 100% failure.

I am the developer of a Google Voice app on Windows Phone. You are right that ultimately, a certain level of trust is required. After giving your credentials to the app, it’s really up to the developer what to do with the information. It is really hard to determine what an app does with that information, and in some cases almost impossible.
What I would suggest is for you to look into 2-step verification for your Google account. It basically allows you to create “temporary” passwords that you can give out to such apps. You can revoke access to these passwords, any time you feel like. Google also reports to you when a password was last used, and these cannot be used for messing with your account’s security settings (I think). The downside, is that there is no way to limit that password to let’s say just Google Voice. So it’s not perfect, but it’s better than giving away your real password.

Seriously, you have issues. To begin with, you are just ranting. I didn’t ask a question; my “questions” were rhetorical. You bombarded my reply with 2 wall of texts. I tried to skim over it, and it’s the same annoying rant. Just go to www.windowsphone.com, remove the device from your 5 device limit, and go on with your life! The functionality is there!!!

You are a biased hater or a troll. Your so-called “argument” has no basis whatsoever. The closest we have to an official statement if from Nokia saying they will support the Lumia 900 with future major updates (and no, I’m not saying that statement is good enough).
And sorry but random rumors don’t count. Just to give you an example, Paul Thurrott posted the same rumor about Apollo. That’s the same guy who said Mango is not coming until 2012, and that Tango will come in 2 parts (Tango 1 & Tango 2). Him posting this actually makes me optimistic about Apollo & the Lumia devices!

So the whole reason you switch is Zune software? For not being able to delete a device from the “5 device limit”? Something that you can easily do from their website? And you could find out with a simple quick post on these forums? Fyi, they removed that functionality because the statistics they collect told them that most people don’t use Zune for this stuff; sorry, you are the 1%! Like it or not, their decision makes perfect sense.

You know what the difference between you and me is? I’ve used the Focus for 16 months and I’ve had the Lumia 900 for 1 month. Something tells me that you haven’t used a WP enough for being able to comment on it (as opposed to trolling).
In any case, his whole post loses any credibility for me with point #2. Btw, any links of other people complaining about lagginess on the Lumia 900?
Fun fact: In the post I replied to, he mentions having 6 WP devices. Let’s assume the Lumia 900 is not included, so it’s his 7th. A couple of post below, Lumia 900 suddenly becomes his 8th device.

If you are implying that Nokia or Microsoft are paying people to do this, I would say that I hugely doubt it. It would be the equivalent of corporate suicide by both companies. They know they already have a hard time pushing WP with techies; they would never risk something like this.
Having said that, I am a big Lumia 900 fan, and I also think all those reviews look “weird”. I was actually discussing this with a friend the other day. The best explanation I can come up with, is that due to all the beating that WP (and the Lumia) has taken from let’s say “less favorable” websites (I’m looking at you The Verge), it makes people more passionate about it. That, and literally every WP fan is choosing the Lumia 900 over other devices right now. These people are also the ones more likely to bother with leaving reviews on Amazon and such. I don’t think there is any such “concentration” for Android devices.

Judging from the initial photos they demoed, and assuming they are 100% real, I would go for “the best thing ever”. I will assume that Nokia WP8 won’t launch with PureView, so that’s one more excuse for me to keep my Lumia 900, and go directly to a PureView device when they are out.

I wouldn’t count on a full Apollo preview at the dev summit. The WP8 API sure, which will probably give some insights into the OS as well. But it seems that in contrast to Mango, Microsoft is not willing this time to announce a lot too soon. In fact, with the Lumia 900 going on sale in Europe at the end of May, unless they can announce that an upgrade path exists for gen 2 devices, I’m not expecting almost anything for Apollo.
21 days ago on When will we see Apollo previewed?

At the very least, they should show the APIs for WP8. That should give a pretty good idea about where they are heading with this.

This! I also don’t get what is the point talking about design, if you are going to put the thing in a case that covers 95% of the device. Like someone else said, I will also just get a sleeve or something, for when I’m in the car.
