I think maybe the Chrome devs are too obsessed with Chrome as an apps platform. They could have done many things to speed up browsing and make scrolling perfectly smooth but they avoid making some optimizations because feature creep dictates full browser functionality.

his blog from the very beginning seemed to be saying that good AR is farther off than good VR. he’s gone into a lot of detail about why AR is more difficult. everything I read there suggests he is one of the people who were in favor for focusing on VR
btw, i dont know why you felt the need to frame it as an insult

I think the major flaw in the reasoning is the interest is only one thing that would make people compatible. It would be suited to people who are already friends and embarrassed to share some interests but between two random people things like appearance and social status have far more influence on compatibility. That person who shares an interest in Magic might still be embarrassed to share it with a random person and might even be repelled from sharing blind if the average person who has that interest is a dork.

His papers are very interesting but at the end of the day it’s clever transformations to do a specific task such as classification. These methods may very well be useful to google but the representations are very sloppy and only reasonably serve a specific task. There is a lack of philosophical sophistication and weak contact with cognitive science that drives the inflation of methods like ANN (artificial neural networks) as a path to a general solution.

aren’t many of the star trek movies just following wrath of khan though? it’s the same misunderstood (i.e. slightly more nuanced) bad dude seeking revenge you see in a lot of action movies

seems like an awful lot of obfuscation to apologize for the reboot being conventional action movies. the “characters” you speak of are filling roles that you see in any other action movie

im not a star trek nerd but I’ve been watching some of the stng blu-rays and the prime directive in those episodes seems a lot more non interventionist than what you’re implying

I blame Apple and Apple copycats. The exaggeration in their marketing has bled into software and technology in general. App marketing is now full of superlatives about how fantastic the product is, that it’s going to make life easier, and change the world. It was inevitable that we would get lifestyle marketing and branding but Apple combined it with the worst possible form of self inflating language.

this is why it’s a mistake for MS to treat desktop as legacy. they focused almost all their effort on metro and made no effort to make metro features available to desktop apps. apple is at least trying to evolve the desktop to meet the desire for lower power computing. i personally do not like the os x but they are actively trying to improve the interface in the last years

well it’s one thing to not like the texture of the material but I also see ignorant statements about the quality of materials that they clearly are not in a position to judge

hopefully that means they fixed some of the obvious bugs. in the last beta I couldn’t even write in a comment window without it eating the first word. and while it’s better than other swipe keyboards it’s a lot worse than it used to be. i used to be able to swipe very sloppy and get the word I wanted. while it’s better than googles swiping it’s not what writing with swipe should be i.e. barely looking at the keyboard
