The trackpoint is far superior to a touchpad IMO
You don’t have to move your hands from the home row to navigate via mouse and can scroll websites and documents without moving your fingers

My car breaks down / runs out of gas on the interstate. I manage to roll it into a gas station but my phone is dead. What do I do?

You forgot the take out phone step in your example =)
Just as many steps, for what doesn’t appear to be any real benefit to many people. That’s not even taking into account the limited availability of phone payment readers.
I’m in NYC and there are still an immense amount of merchants that don’t accept mobile payments. Also, try to buy something like a subway card with your google wallet. Yeah, no dice

A thief can just as easily take your phone. But yes, you can’t get at payment information easily.
However, it only takes a simple phone call to cancel your cards and almost all banks don’t hold you liable for any fraudulent charges

Phone:
Take out phone. Unlock phone. Tap wallet app. Tap credit card I want to use. Swipe my phone across the reader.
Credit Card:
Take out wallet. Take out Card. Swipe.
As much crap as payment cards get, they are still a pretty useful (and simple) piece of technology. Plus, you’ll never be unable to pay for something due to a dead battery. Try paying for something when your phone is dead and out of batteries
