If you hadn’t had insurance you could have simply called to negotiate. The insurance companies doesn’t pay less because they’re insurance companies. They pay less because they’ve effectively pre-negotiated the prices. You can negotiate afterwards too.

Government funding of colleges isn’t exactly the same thing. Tuition goes up because government doesn’t mandate the cost of tuition as a requirement to get government loans and grants. Schools are subsidized by the government but have no demands put on them by that government.
Last I checked, the issue most people have with government involvement with health care is the idiotic belief that quality will go down due to government-mandates. I call that idiotic because health care in every other civilized country still has relatively high quality. And quite frankly, i’ll go without expensive but “world-class” health care for those who can afford it if that means EVERYONE in this country can get regular-ol “great” health care. What good is saving one ultra-wealthy person with a rare disease if thousands of people who aren’t as well off have to die from having no access to even reasonable health care?

What, exactly, is “tough” about imprisoning people without a trial? Was that would made Stalin “tough” but “necessary”?
What’s tough is putting your money where your mouth is. If the government has enough evidence to determine that they’re dangerous terrorists and hold them indefinitely in the first place, then it shouldn’t be very difficult to prosecute them as terrorists and keep them in prison as convicts, now should it?
