Doesn’t really matter whether its thousands or billions – either way, there wasn’t much of a reason for google to block youtube on WP. In the end, they’ll only make money.

Yay. Win win for everyone. Microsoft gets a decent app on Windows Phone, and Google (after 2+ years) has ads on WP. Woohoo.
To nitpick, Tom, the update for Youtube came out on the day Google set as a deadline (the 22nd) not yesterday.

I don’t understand the concern of battery drain. I have like 30 live tiles on my windows phone, all constantly updating with about 10 apps that are allowed to run in the background. I easily still have 50% battery left at the end of the day. If apple can’t pull off live icons without keeping battery drain to a minimum, then there are quite a few problems with iOS.

That’s true.
But if the majority of change in iOS 7 is to standardize the look and feel of the OS and the bundled apps…it’ll be a disappointment, at least to me.

I doubt it. Like I said – the calendar icon already updates, so I doubt that’s an issue.
I guess the only concern (litigation wise) is that Microsoft and Apple did do some kind of binding agreement a few years ago where they agreed that they would not mimic each other’s OSes – I just can’t find the article right now.

Is it not possible to improve functionality without drastically changing the looks?
It could even be as simple as making more of the apps “live.” I.e., the calendar app updates to reflect the date. Why not the weather icon?

I’m somewhat surprised that apple is focusing so much (it sounds like) on the looks of the OS rather than any actual drastic improvements to the OS.
I skimmed through the 9to5mac article, and everywhere it was: the looks of X changes, but it’ll still be the same. I.e., lock screen, notifications, and home screen.
What’s the point of completely rehauling the OS if you’re simply just giving it a new paint job and not actually improving or modifying the functionality?

Yeah. Or even something crazy like a $99 360. If you agree to a two year subscription to Xbox Live (or a two year renewal), you get $25 off the Xbox One.
That’d be a worthwhile deal for anybody who owns a 5 year old 360 to upgrade to a new S model.

In reality: a glorified roku box that you can also play games on. You can do Netflix/hulu/youtube/whatever on it and still play games that you download.
In my dream world: it comes with a 250 gb harddrive and Microsoft figures out a way for you to match your optical disc library with a digital library that allows you to download all your games onto the harddrive. That way, when you do want to play your old 360 games a few years down the road, all you have to do is plug in your 360 and all your games are on the harddrive! No more need for 50 xbox 360 cases holding all your discs. This would essentially kill off any of the few complaints about the lack of backwards compatibility on the One.

Eh…maybe.
I’m assuming that most (if not all) of these new exclusives are going to require the new Kinect, i.e. Ryse. If that’s the case, the 1st gen Kinect isn’t going to be able to hand that.
Now if its the next Halo with minimal Kinect integration (i.e. just voice commands), then sure…it’ll be dual platform. Otherwise, probably only Xbox One.

Ding ding.
If the $99 price cut is too much for Microsoft (in terms of profits), I expect they’ll either cut the optical drive and/or the harddrive.

With the comment about 15 new first party titles and 8 new IPs…it sounds like Microsoft’s focus is on a strong launch for the Xbox One.
One big problem with these next gen consoles is that its going to be hard to find a reason for most consumers to upgrade. Last gen was a little different…there was a very obvious jump in quality from xbox>xbox 360 and ps2>ps3. In this jump, there won’t be as much obvious improvement…so the best way to convince customers is to get some really good games that really excel on the new platform.

Windows Phone does it the simplest and easiest way. You push the search button, tap bing vision, and then scan QR codes/barcodes/magazines/books…whatever. Takes maybe 5 seconds.

The content is available on m.youtube.com – how are they stealing it? It’d be different if it was on a private google server, but anybody can go to m.youtube.com
So again…how is Microsoft stealing money from google?

Yeah. But the problem is…that’s exactly what they’re doing now. HTC one is probably the most premium android phone you can get now, but I doubt its going to make enough money or sell enough to save HTC.
The problem with android is that you need to sell so many just to make a profit. And with Samsung dominating…good luck.

Because Nokia is going up, and HTC is going down?
I don’t know if its worth it (see my original post), but maybe HTC needs to do something drastic like Nokia did 3 years ago. If they keep going like they are now, they’ll be done for soon.

Ding ding ding: “Say there are 50 other developers that have ported an unofficial version of Skype to Chrome.”
That’s the key piece right there. Microsoft is just one in a very long line of developers to make an unofficial youtube app for windows phone. Google hasn’t cared about the first 49, so why the 50th?

They’re not stealing anything. What is Microsoft stealing?
Before Microsoft’s youtube app, all you could do was go to m.youtube.com or use another 3rd party youtube app (that Google apparently didn’t care about).
Guess what? Using m.youtube.com on a Windows Phone does NOT show you any ads (its been like that for two years!). So the fact that Microsoft’s app also doesn’t have any ads is pretty pointless. Nothing has changed there.
