An m3u8 file is basically a link to the stream that you can run in an app like VLC or in certain web browsers (I know that works on iOS; not sure about others). This lets you get around the requirement of having a Mac or iOS device running Safari to see the livestream.
If you’re looking to download a file to sync with a device, you’re probably looking for the official video that will be posted by Apple after the even ends.

I agree, and this is one area where I’m hoping Apple lets us set default apps.
I currently use Gmail for push notifications, but I check/archive/reply, etc in Sparrow. I also occasionally use Mailbox when I want to move something from my inbox, but have it show back up on a certain date.
If I could get push notifications plus set it as default, I wouldn’t look back from Sparrow. Obviously, this app doesn’t have the brightest future since the Google acquisition, but I’ll take what I can get in the meantime.
