Because they are selling magic beans. Their is no formula to predict success based on a screenplay the only reason someone would give this guy $20,000 is to cover their ass. In the event of a bomb a studio exec can say “Hey, I followed the formula this failure is surely someone else’s fault”. The determining factors for Hollywood film success is more then the screenplay it has to do withe the stars in a particular project, what weekend it is released(what time of year and what movies it’s competing with) and what type of movie it is. Even when you factor all those things in it’s still impossible to say exactly why a movie like Green Lantern failed and why a movie like Magic Mike greatly surpassed Hollywood annalists expectations. Art is an inexact science and will remain so.
