Hmm…maybe it’s not so much a socio-economic issue. It’s not as if wealthy people are immune to drug addiction. Perhaps it’s the madness of hopelessness.
“I have a fundamental belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by men who were inspired. I study the Bible daily. Opposition to godliness is atheism in profession and idolatry in practice. Atheism is so senseless and odious to mankind that it never had many professors.” – Sir Isaac Newton
“I do not share the crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth. I prefer an attitude of humility corresponding to the weakness of our intellectual understanding of nature and of our own being.” – Albert Einstein
“An atheist is someone who is certain that God does not exist, someone who has compelling evidence against the existence of God. I know of no such compelling evidence.” – Carl Sagan
Science is merely observation. It is the “what”. It never tells us the “why”. We in our imperfections interpret the “what” to be a “why”. I’m amazed we have the ability to do even that.
“Science tells us what we can know, but what we can know is little, and if we forget how much we cannot know we become insensitive to many things of very great importance.” ― Bertrand Russell
All worldviews must basically answer four topics.
Origin: Where did we come from?
Meaning: Why are we here?
Morality: What’s right and what’s wrong?
And destiny: Where are we going?
It really doesn’t have anything to do with religion. It has to do with your view of the world. He apparently found life as he knew it to be severely lacking.
“Meaninglessness does not come from being weary of pain. Meaninglessness comes from being weary of pleasure.” ― G.K. Chesterton
