You missed my point. I said we deride them as petty criminals and lawbreakers, but there is more to it than that. If I had been born into a situation where there was no upward mobility or chance for success for me, I would probably try to come here too, and I bet you also would. So they broke the law, but my point is they’re human beings and it’s a crappy law, so I refuse to demonize or marginalize them for it.

Agreed. The Nexus 4, HTC One, and HTC One X are probably my favorite-designed phones.

I’m inclined to agree, to an extent. We Americans like to dismiss illegal immigrants as petty criminals and lawbreakers, yet ignore the fact that we were lucky: we were born into a country that is prosperous and provides opportunities for a better life. Many Mexican immigrants, quite frankly, weren’t. If not for an accident of birth, the tables could easily be turned, so how can we so easily dismiss these people who are just fundamentally trying to create better lives for themselves?

I’d prefer a stock One. A “Nexus One,” perhaps?

Exactly. Usually I’m on MS’s side in these spats with Google, but on this one, I’m definitely not. Ads are the only reason YouTube can continue to exist as a free service, and MS knowingly and purposefully doing this is wrong (and probably intended as a stunt meant to generate bad publicity for Google).

Just a harmless joke, and (I thought) a rather funny one at that.

True, I’d say he’s one of the old-guard establishment Republicans (along with Graham, Lugar before he got primaried, etc.) who was actually willing to occasionally be bipartisan (think McCain-Feingold, his support for immigration reform, etc.). That doesn’t mean he’s not a strong conservative, though.

Also pivotal to that scene was (spoiler) (the fact that Ender didn’t know he was actually blowing up a real planet and killing real people.) I hope they don’t spoil that.

I really loved this book, but it’s kind of a brutal indictment of imperialism-obsessed governments as well as a harsh demonstration of the ways adults can manipulate children. So I was really nervous when I heard they were making it into a tentpole summer family action movie, because that’s totally against the ethos of the book. After seeing the trailer, I can’t say my fears were assuaged, but I can’t say they were exacerbated either. I’ll have to further reserve judgment.

True, and I think 35% is too high a rate. I’d prefer to see a tax law passed that lowers the rate to, say, 25% but makes all corporation income earned in the US taxable. I think that’s fair: a lower overall tax rate, which will help smaller businesses and corporations who don’t hold their money overseas, but more taxable income, to make sure these larger corporations pay their fair share and ensure the law is at least revenue-neutral.

That’s always been the case, though. The reason people care more about HTC than Sony is because HTC has at least brought legitimate innovation to Android through their hardware and even software (back in 2010, remember how great everyone thought Sense was?), so it would be sad to see HTC collapse. Also, Sony has so many other businesses, and they’re doing nothing inspiring on the smartphone front, so you’re right: it is hard to care if they do well.
