Yes, they replied to my review on the Play store implying that there was a lot debate about adding the Read Contacts permission. They didn’t say anything about needing it for future features though.
Whatever those new features are, they’ll have to be very special to tempt me back.
I loved using Pocket but I switched to Readability when they added the Read Contact permission on the android app. I still recommend Pocket as the best read it later service to people if they’re not bothered by that.
