The thing that gets me is that this is so far below Hollywood’s standards as to not be believable. I expected more from the CIA. A paper map, compass, Nokia phone from 2002? That’s shameful. And who carries a letter like that? Even if you met your contact, was he going to take that massively incriminating piece of evidence home with him? I would suspect that some of the “evidence” was planted by the FSB. Why would you be carrying multiple pairs of sunglasses to a evening meeting (it was dark when he was arrested)? Who carries a paper atlas? Get a smartphone! It’s almost like there’s too much evidence.
