Michael recommended a shoe that worked for him. You recommended (put forward with approval as being suitable for a particular purpose or role) a shoe that worked for you. Anyone who wanted to take up either would want to make sure (as one does with any recommendation) that the shoe was a good fit for them (wordplay!).
