Unfortunately, bad writing ins’t all that unusual on the Verge anymore. It’s sad.

Except they DIDN’T say dwindling growth. They said ’With downloads dwindling…" They could have said “With growth of downloads slowing…” or some other accurate statement, but instead they chose to go with the more sensational, completely false statement.

I couldn’t agree more. The writing on the Verge is getting really bad. The headline says “downloads are dwindling” but the article says downloads increased 6% last year. I’ll stop reading this site if they keep doing BS like this.

It’s amazing to my how nearly everyone at the Verge, and tech journalists in general, seem to think the Gmail is synonymous with email. IT’S NOT! I always used to be so baffled when Verge writers went on and on about how bad email is on iOS, and then I realized that what they really meant is GMAIL is bad on iOS because not all of the features work with the native mail client.
I know a lot of people use Gmail, but it’s good to remember that there ARE other email systems.

You’re absolutely right. It’s amazing to me that people can’t see this. These grandstanding politicians are making outrageous statements to whip up the angry mob, and the mob is eating it up.

What is this quote from? It says that “Apple Operations International, which has no employees or physical presence in Ireland…” According to Apple, they have nearly 4,000 employees there. See below. There is a big difference between 0 and 4000, and I doubt Apple would go before Congress and lie about something so easily verified. There is such a huge amount of misinformation being written about this issue, and people are so quick to believe it. It’s kind of astonishing.
Established more than thirty years ago, Apple’s base of operations in Ireland now employs nearly 4,000 people engaged in manufacturing, customer service, sales support, supply chain and risk management operations and finance support services.

Unless you think “average Joe” is pulling in six figures… you are way off. This average Joe would literally have to make $107,000 before he pays 20.1% federal income taxes – and that is assuming he is single, with no kids and no mortgage. If Joe has any of those things his income would have to be MUCH higher for him to pay 20.1%. That’s because our tax rates are marginal, and quite low for all but the highest earners.

How is YouTube “integrated” in iOS 6? There is a YouTube app in the App Store, but that’s it as far as I can see.

They are using standard accounting practices and pay all the taxes that are due in those foreign countries. If France or Ireland has a problem with it I’m sure they will do something about it. What difference does it make to us? The US government has no claim to any of this overseas money, so why is Congress so concerned about it?
So let’s recap: these are foreign transactions that are taxed according to foreign laws… but for some reason our Congress has its panties in a twist over it? It’s almost like they want foreign governments to tax Apple more. How is that good for US businesses? This whole issue is a press stunt so that incompetent politicians can show voters back home that they are tough on big corporations. The problem is, they picked the wrong company to attack, because Apple is already paying more taxes than anyone else. If they want to take a stand on corporate taxes, they should start by ending corporate welfare to the big oil companies who pay virtually NO taxes, and leave companies like Apple alone.

What you’re suggesting is that to be “American” Apple should make charitable contributions to the US government, and what I’m suggesting is that that is absurd. Apple paid $6 billion dollars last year. There are massive corporations, such as oil companies, who are busy destroying the planet while paying no taxes whatsoever. Why isn’t congress calling them to task? This is nothing more than a politically motivated witch hunt for the purposes of vote pandering to the angry mob.

Our tax laws, passed by Congress and signed by the sitting President, specifically allow this type of R&D expense sharing. Your outrage over this is entirely misplaced. If you think it’s so shameful, talk to congress, not Apple. What would be shameful is if Apple didn’t organize its finances in order to maximize profits. That is their lawful obligation to their shareholders, and I for one am glad they do it so well.

Read Apple’s statement. They unapologetically state that they take advantage of the existing tax laws, and that they would like the laws to be changed. They don’t try to hide it.

Exactly! If Congress is so upset about these so-called loopholes then they should close them! No one can do it but them… so stop complaining about it and DO IT! Or shut up about it.

I don’t understand your house analogy… but it really doesn’t matter. Apple is already the largest US taxpayer, but apparently some people want them to pay even MORE than they owe, which is effectively a charitable contribution to the US government. Apple shareholders (myself included) would start a riot.
If Congress really thinks it’s a good idea to change these tax laws that they complain so much about, then they should change them! But until then they should stop all this grandstanding and leave companies like Apple, who obey the laws and pay a crap ton of taxes, alone.

Not really. Did you read the part where they testify that the money funneled through the Irish company HAS ALREADY BEEN TAXED in the country it came from? They already paid taxes on it if any taxes were due. Yes it’s true that Ireland doesn’t tax the money AGAIN, but so what? And none of this has anything to do with US taxes because Apple doesn’t funnel US revenue through Ireland. They pay US taxes on US sales and then keep the profits here.

They certainly can explain it, and do so quite effectively, in their testimony. Click on “Apple” above in the source attribution section and read it. They explain the purpose of the Irish company in great detail. It makes perfect sense, and has nothing to do with funneling cash from US sales overseas to avoid taxes.

And is there any evidence that iPhones sold in the US are paying licensing fees to this Irish company?
