the real reason why its completely useless is transit info. I tried the jump out to third party transport transit apps in the period before – thank god – google maps came back – it was a total mess for london. The process of jumping out to the app, the query not going with you properly, the info itself – just a joke.
Google maps london transport info is superlative – the mix between buses and the tube, depending on destination, the transit times are spot on – its one of the best software services I’ve ever used in my life. Its surreal how powerful the google backend is here.
the bottom line is that apple’s attempt to do this was one of the first concrete examples the they were beginning to make stupid decisions for the wrong reasons. This will end up a complete white elephant for them. they don’t have the fundamental know how for cartography, nevermind the deep search aspects that are intrinsic to it. the idea that some yelp stuff and throwing you out to random third party transpoort info apps is going to cut it – that is never going to cut it.
this is a really expensive stupid thing for them to have done, and it wasn’t in the interests of the customer, it was solely in their interests and against google.
Once I saw how incompetent it was as a software service, i lost heart in apple a little. Also I’m an editor – what I felt after I saw FCPX was much worse.
