Hey Redbox, easy fix: Provide a “Max Payne: Disc One” and a “Max Payne: Disc Two” to be rented from your kiosk. Better yet, keep making boneheaded business decisions while Netflix and Gamefly eat your lunch.

You need to set up a pin to use Google Wallet, not sure about other services.

You don’t need service to use Google Wallet. I’ve used it in airplane mode and it works fine.

A couple of things:
1. Apple can’t ‘fix’ the mobile payments issue with a phone or mobile device. As I wrote in my post about Google Wallet, the issue isn’t with the phone or device software, it’s with the payment terminals. The most widely adopted terminals are still rare to find in regular use. WalMart, Target, and other big name retail stores have to buy in for it to become ubiquitous. The best that Apple can do is release a phone with NFC and hope that their users push the agenda for them. I might be wrong, but I’d guess it will not be built into the next iPhone. Apple tends to release when the market is ripe.
2. Using mobile payments is as-yet very niche. Google Wallet is likely the most widely deployed phone payment service (which is basically on two phones, neither of which sold very well).
3. Payment isn’t the only thing NFC can be used for. Imagine Subway tickets, airline tickets, or Passports done strictly via NFC. Payment will likely be the biggest chunk of NFC, but it’s not the only one.
4. There is likely a lot of money to be made, so of course there are a bunch of competing interests.

Outdoors with plenty of light, any camera will shine. The GNex camera (whether caused by software or hardware) is really bad. I constantly have to retake photos because of blurriness. Indoors with even moderate amounts of light it is almost unusable.

It’s most likely people at work. I know a lot of businesses that block the desktop site. I use my mobile phone to keep tabs during the work week.
On a semi-related note, why must people continue to use averages? Medians are much less likely to be affected by the crazy people who spend days on Facebook.

Someone from Samsung needs to hire the hardware designers from HTC (better yet, Nokia) and make something different. For all the hype, the SGIII looks like a Galaxy Nexus with a button. Don’t get me wrong, I love my GNex, but design-wise it’s basically a slab of plastic with a wonderful screen stuck behind it. Also, TouchWiz fail.

My thoughts on BB10:
1.) Some seemingly great innovations on keyboard speed and accuracy.
2.) The camera app looks really wonderful.
3.) Ecosystem is huge (see WP7’s bain).
4.) Apple and Google will absorb some of this greatness (see Apple’s Android notifications and Android 4.0’s lock screen).
5.) Will RIM be able to keep it’s corporate customers? Our workplace still issues Blackberry Bolds, and will not support anything else. Is this a big perk?

Sonicmerlin, in one of your recent comments you mention having a Droid Charge. To this I ask: How do YOU know what ICS is like?
My daily driver is a Galaxy Nexus, my wife has an iPhone 4, and I see absolutely no difference in speed.

I agree with Brad, it would be a biased sample (newer phones likely access the Play Store more often than old phones). That said, this is an odd time for Google to be giving out these numbers given that many of the big phones from the second half of 2011 will be getting their updates soon. Perhaps they’re trying to shame carriers and phone manufacturers?
I disagree with his assessment that The Verge is simply accepting the spin. Given that they’re comparing the current numbers to last month’s numbers, the growth in 4.0 use would be a pretty reliable measure.
As an analogy, consider that are more foreign cars sold today than were sold 20 years ago. If you were to survey cars sold in the past two weeks, you’d probably see a greater proportion of foreign cars in the set than are actually on the road. Saying this is representative of the full set would be spurious. If you were to, however, compare foreign cars sold in a two-week period last month to foreign cars sold in a two-week period this month, the growth would be mostly reliable. It’s not a perfect analogy, but hopefully it helps!

Hey Apple. Please keep it up! I’d love it if you’d chase some more developers toward WP7 and Android. You may make a ton on each developer that stays, but you’re going to be dividing an increasingly smaller pie.

Yeah, I think the Play Store could really use a similar cleanup. I can’t tell you how many times I search for an app by the exact name, and it’s not the top result. Given how great Google is at search (even given trillions of junk websites), I’m surprised they struggle with search in a store that they curate.

Photography, music, movies, etc seem to be diverging to two extremes in the past few years. One that favors analog ‘flaws’ and one that favors digitized cleanliness. Both have their standout successes and their massive failures, and I’m glad both exist.
Great read! Really thoughtful.
