30 million iPhones and 10 million iPads. Cute!
Microsoft sells nearly 90 million copies of Windows each quarter. This is relevant because Windows is what we are talking about in this post. Let’s stay on topic.

Yeah, Apple has done such a great job of selling an idea. I would like to see Nokia & Microsoft start promoting it’s self as a premium brand as well. The “Smartphone beta test ads” are cute but not exactly aspirational.
That will help break some of those “I like Apple” and “I hate Microsoft” attitudes.

First… YES, for lack of a better term, can we all agree to referencing “Metro” for Windows 8 Metro Environment and Windows Phone? There seems to be a new platform forming here and for lack of a better term “Metro” is a good fit. The context of the conversation can help differentiate talking about design and platform.
You’re on to something here. I think there are a lot of benefits of that they could bring to Bing if they could step away from some of the design that exists on the desktop. This goes exactly to what you are saying with immediately start searching video and audio data. The current functionality gets lost on the Bing homepage for new users who are afraid or not drawn to click buttons. What you have shown is much more user friendly even if it’s not as pleasant as seeing and cute image from Bing’s homepage.
Well done. I hope MS reads these forums. :)

I never thought about it but since the Desktop loads as an app when launched from the Start screen, does that mean all those annoying background processes that run on the desktop wait to load as well?
I doubt it but haven’t tried myself to confirm it.

Got into it because I could install it on my own hardware.
Stayed with it because it’s fast, stable, and very low maintenance.

I think the role of Skype is much larger than Microsoft’s ecosystem.
Yes, eventually it will be a core communication for all of Microsoft’s platforms. You should be able to get an integrated experience in Windows, Phone, and Xbox but I think MS is thinking bigger. Skype will also give you great experiences on iOS and Android devices as well as Smart TV’s, Cable Boxes, and other connected devices.
Just a guess, but MS may see the limited availability of iMessage and BBM and believe they can target the entire market to win over customers.

Here’s what Mozilla is asking for:
“Of particular concern are the APIs that IE has access to which Microsoft is denying other browsers, including VirtualAlloc / HeapAlloc and friends, CreateNamedPipe, ConnectNamedPipe, DisconnectNamedPipe, CreateProcess, and various others.
These APIs allow for things like making memory executable, a prerequisite for building a JIT [just-in-time compiler]. Without a JIT, it will be impossible to build a modern browser. These APIs also allow for things like spawning additional processes, and communicating between them — something we use to isolate plug-ins for security and stability purposes and other browsers, including IE, use to isolate tabs and windows for security and stability purposes."

I have to agree with him on the javascript speed part. There is no way a Modern Web Browser can work without fast javascript.

I don’t believe the word BLOCKING was used once and I think you missed the part where I said, “Mozilla is never going to get access to Windows RT Desktop.” Did you watch the video? This is all about a Metro version of Firefox. I was hoping to skip any talk of desktop, Microsoft should not, will not, can not allow access to the Windows RT Desktop.
No one is asking for all hell to break loose. There is an issue with performance in the Metro Environment in Windows RT that does not allow competitive browsers to be built. That is an issue. I don’t want to see these tablets be hindered because of slow performing apps. We’ll be left with silly games and miss out on creative apps.
Microsoft should address this with a work around or sandboxed access to the necessary API’s. They can do this in an elegant matter that will not create security holes.

Thanks for the response. I agree with you completely.
I do not think in any way Mozilla should get access to the Win32 API’s nor the desktop. I personally think that Microsoft should never included the desktop in WinRT. Microsoft should be building the necessary to work in a sandbox in WinRT. They should also be more vocal about the work that is going on to make this possible, that would help silence the courts.

7% in China and 8% in Russia. I’m not sure how accurate these numbers are but their is the sense that things are starting to slowly swell.
I’m starting to think that even a small amount of momentum building throughout the year could turn into something bigger with Windows Phone 8. They have to do something because even if Windows Phone 8 is awesome, perception is reality and people might consider it DOA.
