Apparently the sensor controlling the chemistry distribution in their C-41 machine broke, so the films were underdeveloped and muddy. That didn’t explain the scratched negatives, of course, so I believe they just let the intern do the developing :)
The XP2 handled the mistreatment quite well, but the BW400CN negatives look really muddy and it took copious amounts of Lightroom magic to get the contrast levels up.

I dig the “in your face” editing of this shot. Not what I aim for myself, but it really works in this one.

Aaaaaah, the joys of shooting film. The lab screwed up all (!) my C-41 vacation pictures, which gives them a very unexpected “plastic lens” feel. Am picking up my Jobo tank today, so at least in the future I have only myself to blame for badly developed film.

Hmmmm, hand-tailored luggage, M9-P as a gift for the ex, you seem to be rather well off.
Have you considered employing a sherpa to carry your stuff for you? Additional bonus would be that he could make you sandwiches as well!

I have a Meike battery grip for my 7D with an in-built timer for time-lapse shots. It’s rather cheap plastic and I wouldn’t use it if it was raining, but apart from that it has been working really well for about 2 years now.
3 days ago on 3rd party grips for 7D any good?

Yes, of course. Only hipsters may apply, this camera has no merits otherwise.

It is definitely cheaper, in some respect it might be faster but it definitely is not better than a Leica at what it does. It’s a completely different class of camera, which just happens to look like a Leica, or more specifically like a Minolta CLE.

Your comment regarding lenses leaves me scratching my head. Fuji is the only one who nailed when it comes to selection of lenses available at launch – 27, 50 and 90 – all basic focal lengths and every single one of them is large aperture (read fast) lens. So I’d say it’s a big plus rather than minus.
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

As I understand all Canon USM lenses (and of course equivalent lenses by all manufacturers) allow for full time manual focusing to override AF, and they are not focus by wire, are they? I’d be surprised if they are…

I am not aware of any aftermarket specialists that offer that type of service.
But if you are looking for top quality glass in a small package maybe you would consider looking into digital rangefinders. These might be ridiculously expensive (M9 + Tri-Elmar 28-35-50) and of course only manual focus, but they are undeniably small and light.

Great review! The OM-D does indeed look like a very nice piece of kit, I’d kill for an IBIS on my NEX.

I really dig the tones of the shot in combination with that car, feels very authentic! It might have worked better to use a reflector instead of the fill flash, but I understand these are a bit bulky…
And I wouldn’t worry about the blown highlights, I think they work in that shot. Well done!

I think that a very important aspect of a fixed lens camera is, whether you are comfortable with the focal length it provides and 24mm or 35mm make a big difference, imho. I personally don’t like the FoV of a 24mm lens on APS-C, so I decided against the X100. Apart from that I am quite sure it is a very attractive, well made camera that will be loads of fun to shoot. And if they had offered it with a 35mm lens, I’d be rocking one right now :)
And about your second point, it very much depends on the subject. I believe landscape photography really benefits from technical excellence whereas e.g. street and people or pet photography are much less dependent on it.

But you would agree that, for the average beginner, the (135 equivalent) FoV between 35 and 55 is probably more useful than between 50 and 100?
Also, fast (equivalent) 35mm legacy glass gets expensive really quick…

Maybe not when viewing from the top, but if you take a side view there is a big difference. Tne NEX-5n comfortably fits into a jacket pocket, the T2i most probably won’t.
But, if size is not a consideration, a DSLR is a very valid choice

Definitely not a fan, there are much better cameras in that price range. If you want a great compact, get the Canon S90/95/100, or read up on the mirrorless system cameras.
Or buy an old film Leica…

UV filters are a waste of money. If you want to protect the front element of your lens make sure to always use your lens hood.
