That’s just not true. From the Win8 blog:
While a few of these visual changes are hinted at in the upcoming Release Preview, most of them will not yet be publicly available. You’ll see them all in the final release of Windows 8!

Apple invented the term. They invented the criteria. It’s not an industry standard by any means. They just made it up. It’s wholly “their thing”.

I’ve yet to see an original source for that claim, first of all. Steve Jobs just said 300ppi at 12 inches was the “most detail a human retina could see” or something along those lines. I don’t know where that information came from, and all the quotes and info sources about the Retina display comes from his keynote.

For me, it’s just more disappointing that the general population so handily hopped on board the Apple Marketing train and made “retina” display a “thing”.
It is kinda funny, though, that they found a way to get the general population talking about nerdy technical specs like ppi, but unfortunately when I talk about ppi with people who know “retina display” they typically don’t have a clue what I’m talking about (unless they read stuff like this site or Engadget or whatever).

Totally agreed RE: naming. An Apple friend of mine was arguing that the iPhone 4 should be called the “4G” because the iPhone’s numbering system always matches the generation, even though “4G” is confusing because it implies it’s an LTE phone.
I also pointed out that the “second gen” iPhone was called the 3G because it was 3G capable. And the 3rd Gen was called the 3GS because it was… 3G capable and “faster”? Their numbering system makes no sense because they switched what the numbers mean from generation to generation so there’s absolutely no consistency.
The “4” was the first plain-number generation, presumably because it’s NOT capable of 4G. By their current track record I would expect the first LTE iPhone to be called the 4G… or the “4GS”.

Of course it would. It’s a marketing term INVENTED by Apple. It can mean whatever they want it to mean.
