I don’t think people are threatened. I think they are hating because this seems like a gimmick.

I think you touched on the key conclusion at the end. They screw customers over, because they CAN. What’re you going to do? Switch from AT&T to verizon in two years, then after realizing you’re getting screwed by Verizon, switch back? The problem is that there are very few options for customers.
