and 99% of the time this is for service the cities offers to its citizens and businesses. Roads, schools, etc… Again this bill only gives taxes to the purchasers location. In the past this wasn’t an issue as the purchaser and business were typically in the same place… and even if they weren’t the business’s location dictated where the taxes went. Now its the opposite. So since cities don’t receive any taxes from a businesses gains (just the people that purchase local) why would a city want growing online business in their community? It unfairly puts a burden on online business owners or anyone that wants to sell online. Cities won’t recruit online businesses like they do factories and what not because they wont’ see the tax revenue. Services used but no way to pay for them.
Knee jerk bill.

My main beef with this bill doesn’t correctly distribute the tax money appropriately.
Its a knee jerk reaction to an unrelated fiscal problem (thats imaginary) in the congress.
If were talking about unfair tax advantages why aren’t we tackling the bigger issue of Corn and Oil subsidieces. Clearly this is more about Corporations put their foot on the neck of innovators, big and small (Amazon/Ebay/Etsy). They use “Think about Ma’ and Pa’ Brick and Mortar” like they use the phrase “Think of the Children”
Not to mention that they do little to outline how ANY of this works. The bill is 5 pages long with no details. It doesn’t address the fact that you could possibly deal with 9000 tax districts, its $1 million in revenue (not profits), and who is responsible for making any of this happen (States/Fed/Business)

I’m not saying you should pay for the entire road but this bill doesn’t reflect the use of services from business to purchaser. With this bill it would benefit cities to have people purchase online and stop them from recruiting online business because they get no tax income of them being in their city. Brick and Mortar have the “unfair” advantage of possible kickbacks and benefits from a city for the taxes they bring in. Where as if you are an online business then you send the tax money to the place where the buyer is from? How does that make sense?

but many (almost all) states have different rates in different areas as well as different different rates for different items or even different rates for the same item based on use. Its not as simple as (Rate * Subtotal = Total w/tax)

This bill puts a burden on business who choose not to operate on local scale. Also it misappropriates taxes to areas that receive products from online retailers instead of both sides of shipments

I’d like to know how this is so? People think the price difference is only true when people say I got a TV on Amazon cheaper then local small shop. Its not due to taxes its because of volume. Best Buy/Walmart coudl compete bu only choose to cost more for margins because of THEIR CHOICE to have a showroom.

They’ve been pushing this bill as creating a fair marketplace but the internet had already done that. The internet gave small businesses (and large ones) equal footing when it came to convenience. Brick and Mortor had the daily commute convenience and online had from home convenience, shipping balanced the scales in terms of cost (its just volume or profit margin that make things seem unbalanced). I don’t see how this bill makes it fair?
I understand the paying the government for services aspect but lets stop kidding ourselves that this makes the marketplace fair.

The argument is a physical business doesn’t have to deal with 9000 districts of tax policy.
Also giving taxes to the buyers location doesn’t put the money in the right spot. Taxes are used to pay for services used. In e-commerce the buyers location isnt’ the only place where services are used. We need to spend some time coming up with a responsible bill instead of a 5 page band-aid

its bad because it creates an unfair tax burden on sellers to multiple states. Also it doesn’t really make sense if you understand how taxes are supposed to work. They are supposed to be used to cover services that are effected by the business and the seller. but how does the highway between the buyer and seller get any tax out of this? Yes there needs to be a tax but this isn’t how it should work. Also the bill is 5 pages of drivel. Its not thought out but a knee jerk reaction to situation that needs a real thought behind it.

but it doesn’t address the real issue. taxes are meant to be paid where services are used. but giving to my local government doesn’t pay for the highway between the distribution center and my house. I think people are right to think something should be paid but this bill isn’t the right answer. Lets think about it before we slap a tax on it because we everyone is going fracking banana’s over getting our “fiscal house in order.” That phrase is the new comic sans.

I think paying your “fair share” is a decent idea but this tax doesn’t address that. Large business have greater access to business services while small brick and motor don’t have to deal with mutli state sales. This is unfairly targeting online small businesses. Its not like small brick and motor over $1 million have to coordinated paying taxes in 9000 tax districts and yet they still pay their share when they pay their share of taxes on their shipping costs.
what happens if a business doesn’t pay? and I don’t either? The bill is only 5 pages long and doesn’t address many of the concerns.
