iOS and Android now have lion's share of mobile gaming revenues, not just playing time

Android and iOS devices now account for 58 percent of mobile gaming revenues, marginalizing the incumbent leaders, Nintendo's DS family and Sony's PSP.

You won't be surprised to hear that most gaming on the move is now being done on smartphones, primarily of the iPhone and Android variety. What should raise an eyebrow, however, is the latest data from Flurry and the NPD Group that suggests those two platforms are now dominating in terms of revenue as well. 58 percent of income from portable game software during 2011, it asserts, came from iOS and Android devices, pushing the Nintendo DS family to a smallish 36 percent share and Sony's PSP to a Safari-like 6 percent of the total. Only two years ago, the two dedicated portable consoles commanded 81 percent of this revenue pie, which shows just how quickly consumers' habits can change.

The tepid launch of the Nintendo 3DS certainly hasn't helped matters and Sony's PSP is awaiting its great revival in the form of the upcoming Vita, but the overall trend seems to be toward cheaper and more convenient games on multifunctional devices. With the introduction of dual-core processors this year and quad-core variants in 2012, we don't expect Android and iOS to lose any of their current momentum. It'll just be interesting to see if Nintendo has any stronger riposte in the works for these new challengers. The Flurry estimates place a value of $3.3 billion on the portable gaming market and we can't imagine the Japanese company would be willing to give it up without a legitimate fight.
