Overheating and fire concerns stemming from two external battery cases have forced both accessory manufacturer Mophie and retailer Best Buy to issue recalls in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). 

Mophie has announced that approximately 6,118 units of its Juice Park Air for the iPod touch (4th generation) are included, pointing to a faulty integrated circuit switch as the root of a potential overheating issue. CPSC cites 110 reports of the case becoming warm to the touch along with 44 instances where the product experienced deformation due to heat. That's not the worst of it though, as nine reports of minor burns to users have been documented. 

Best Buy has a somewhat larger problem on its hands, with 32,000 battery cases for the iPhone 3G / 3GS distributed under its Rocketfish brand subject to the recall. Sold between April 2010 and this past September at Best Buy and Future Shop locations throughout the United States and Canada, the accessory is prone to overheating when charging and is therefore being designated a potential fire hazard. 14 cases of malfunction have been reported thus far, with three involving direct burns to users and four related to property damage.
