We've just been tipped that Verizon Wireless' data service is down in Chicago. We've cross-checked that report against our own LTE Galaxy Nexus in New York City, and we can confirm that's not working, either. Verizon's suffered a number of high-profile LTE outages over the course of 2011 — it hasn't exactly been smooth sailing on the relentless march to 200 million covered Americans — and it's rough to see the network take another black eye before the year's out.

Update: We've received a statement from Verizon — 3G is said to be operating normally, but they're investigating the LTE situation.

We are investigating reports of some customers experiencing trouble accessing the 4G LTE network. The network itself continues to operate and all customers continue to be able to make calls, send text messages and utilize data services. 3G devices are operating normally.
