According to Yahoo, the iPhone has pulled past celebrities, pop musicians, and major news events to become the top search term of 2011 (as well as an A-list celeb in its own right). This isn't the first time a gadget has been in the number one spot: Vera Chan, the search engine's web trends analyst, notes that the PlayStation 2 was the top contender in 2002. According to Reuters, the "list is based on aggregated visitor activity on the network and billions of consumer searches." Casey Anthony, who is nobody's idea of a celebrity, is number two, while the Japan earthquake and the death of Osama bin Laden were the only news stories on the list, at number nine and ten respectively.
