Sony Europe has just announced full details of its brand new 13.1-inch VAIO Z, and it's a real looker. The big news here is the external GPU and optical drive, or what Sony's calling the Power Media Dock. The vertically standing peripheral (pictured above) uses Intel's Light Peak (yes, the same thing as Apple's Thunderbolt) via a proprietary USB 3.0 port and optical cable to connect to the laptop. And not only does it provide an AMD Radeon HD 6650M with 1GB of VRAM, but also allows you to connect up to three additional displays via its HDMI and VGA ports.
Sure, that's the laptop's standout feature, but the 2.6-pound system is an impressive ultraportable in its own right. In terms of specs, it's got a 2.7GHz Core i7-2620M processor, 8GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a 256GB SSD, and Intel HD Graphics 3000 onboard, with the aforementioned 13.1-inch, 1600 x 900 resolution display. Yep, all of that in just a 16.65mm thick package, although there's an optional sheet battery — just like the VAIO SA and SB Series — which should should hike up the thickness but increase runtime to nearly 14 hours. It's also got a 1.3 megapixel Exmor webcam, 802.11a/b/g/n, 3G options, Bluetooth 2.1, one USB 2.0 port, that aforementioned USB 3.0 port, HDMI, and stereo speakers with Dolby virtual surround. No word on pricing or availability outside of Europe — where they are expected in July — but we'll keep you posted. Until then, hit the break for PR and some glossy pictures.
Update: Sony's UK site now has the VAIO Z up for pre-order with pricing starting at £1,434 (that's $2,294), with the dock running an additional £400 ($640).

Featuring high-speed I/O data transfer based on the architecture codenamed ‘Light Peak’, Power Media Dock boosts graphics performance while adding numerous extra connectivity options.
