The Samsung Android tablet family today welcomes a new member in the form of the Galaxy Tab 7.7. As with the Tab 8.9 and 10.1 that came before it, this slate's name is derived from its 7.7-inch screen size, although unlike its predecessors, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 offers the superlative Super AMOLED Plus display technology. That's a first among tablets and should finally give the iPad something to worry about when it comes to boundless viewing angles and luscious color reproduction. Pixel density is another strength of Samsung's latest, with a 1280 x 800 resolution that's been typical of 10-inch pads making its way down in weight class. Speaking of weight, the Tab 7.7 checks in at a reasonable 335g / 12oz, although its most noteworthy measurement will undoubtedly be its thickness: just 7.89mm / 0.31in!

Within that pancake of a case, Samsung fits in a dual-core 1.4GHz applications processor, up to 64GB of storage, a 3-megapixel autofocus camera, and a 5,100mAh battery that's claimed to last for a full 10 hours of video playback. Yes, it looks pretty certain that stat sheet enthusiasts have found their latest object of desire. Should they care about software as well, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 won't disappoint as it runs Android Honeycomb 3.2 right out of the gate, though some might not appreciate the inclusion of TouchWiz on top of that.

We'll have a full set of hands-on photos and videos for you just as soon as Samsung's IFA 2011 keynote is over, but until then, you can jump past the break for a gallery of official pictures. A couple of questions do remain unanswered as well, such as the pricing and release date specifics, so we'll be digging around for more intel on those matters too. Hold tight!

Update: For what it's worth, Samsung said at its IFA press conference to expect the Tab 7.7 in the "next coming months."
