OmniVision Technologies starts off day three of CES with the unveiling of its latest digital imaging sensor, a 1/4-inch CMOS chip it describes as tailored for shooting 720p HD video at 60fps. The OV9713 is based around the company's new Omni-Pixel3-HS pixel architecture, which OmniVision says leads to "excellent" low-light performance and improvements to both the sensor's dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The company envisions a variety of uses for the OV9713 that include entertainment, telepresence, and security monitoring implementations. Further, OmniVision touts reduced latency as a benefit of the 60ps framerate and says built-in HDR capabilities make the sensor a prime candidate for indoor situations with less-than-ideal lighting. The OV9713 is available now for sampling with volume production anticipated in the second quarter.
