Tonight Facebook is finally taking the wraps off of Open Graph, launching with 60 new partners ranging from smaller sites like Airbnb, Foodly, and Pinterest to big names like Ticketmaster and Rotten Tomatoes. Carl Sjogreen, Facebook's Director of Platform Product, debuted the new Open Graph partners and larger launch tonight, though it was initially shown off at last year's f8 conference. Oddly, Zuckerberg was nowhere in sight at this evening's brief launch.

The Open Graph initiative is a way to take data from other social networks and apps, and pull it into the Facebook ecosystem. For example, the music you're listening to on Spotify or running distances you track on MapMyRun will be pulled into Facebook. Now, your cooking, eating, traveling, and running won't be siloed in your separate social networks; all your digital data can come streaming into Facebook.

Starting now, anyone will be able to submit an app for public use on the Facebook Timeline. On its Developers Blog, Facebook's Eddie O'Neil also announced news, linked to developer tutorials, and teased a set of guidelines that should be going live soon. Many of the new apps are available now, so now's a great time to figure out how they interact with your Timeline.

We spoke briefly with Mike Vernal, Director of Engineering, Facebook Platform. Vernal noted that apps will need to go through a approval process before they can publish to a user's Timeline, but that the process shouldn't take especially long. Right now, Facebook isn't focusing on the content being plugged into the Open Graph as an advertising opportunity, but we imagine it would be difficult to ignore the quality and focus of that sort of information forever. We also asked if it would be possible to create Open Graph "mashups" that could combine information from different apps to create new content on Facebook and the answer, it turns out, is yes. If a user were to explicitly allow two apps to speak to each other through Facebook's permission system, they would be able to mash up their content. We look forward to the day when our fitness app reports "burning off" the calories we accumulated the day before while "chowing down" on a cheeseburger as reported by a food app.
