We thought that the Wikipad, a surprisingly comfortable $499 Android tablet with detachable gaming controls, might actually have a chance in the market. Perhaps not: Today was the day the Wikipad was supposed to go on sale at GameStop, but the company has just announced the tablet will be delayed until further notice.
According to Wikipad's statement, which you can read in its entirety below, the tablet apparently wasn't quite ready for launch. The company claims that it's planning to "enhance the Wikipad bundle" and make a "minor refinement," and will also throw in a "special bonus gift" of some sort for those who pre-ordered at GameStop.
However, we weren't able to get Wikipad to tell us what those changes might be, or even a ballpark estimate as to when the tablet might begin shipping, so we're hoping the reality isn't more serious than the company lets on. It seems odd that the company would wait this long to tell customers about the delay. GameStop has also stopped taking pre-orders for the device, which isn't a good sign. We'll let you know when we hear what Wikipad's plans are.
Here's the company's statement:
The Wikipad team has been relentlessly working with our manufacturers and partners to perfect the Wikipad bundle to ensure our first product is the best tablet and entertainment experience at launch. There is a last minute opportunity to enhance the Wikipad bundle as well as a minor refinement needed to ensure our first customers are completely satisfied with the Wikipad.
We have informed our retail partners about this delay. For those who pre-ordered the Wikipad at GameStop through today October 31st, we will deliver the refined and upgraded bundles as well as a special bonus gift with the pre-order.
We are very eager to deliver the Wikipad experience and are passionate about excellence. We apologize for this delay and want you to know that we are committed to bringing you the very best, high-end gaming tablet possible.
We are in the final stage and will be announcing the new date soon.
