Hollywood seems keen to turn 2013 into the year of the sci-fi blockbuster, with trailers released so far for films such as Oblivion and After Earth. The industry has yet another trailer for us to pore over frame by frame — this time it’s Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro of Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth fame. The trailer shows a world under assault by giant monsters thanks to a mysterious portal in the Pacific Ocean. Naturally, the people of Earth create impossibly large robots in order to stave off the threat of disaster, but each robot needs to be controlled by two pilots that share a mental link. It’s a slow, brooding teaser that might cause some to think of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but the fact is that it’s more of an homage to old Japanese kaiju movies like Godzilla. Those paying attention may also notice the familiar tones of GLaDOS, the artificial intelligence system voiced by actress Ellen McClain in Valve's Portal. Let’s just hope the computer that assists our heroes in the movie isn’t filled with the same murderous intent.
