Sony is reportedly planning a 5-inch 1080p phone codenamed Yuga. The phone has been heavily rumored over the past few months. After early benchmark results revealed Sony was planning something big, the Swiss blog Android Schweiz leaked a number of images and specs back in November. More recently, Russian site Mobile Review has released new photos of a prototype it claims to have in its possession. So what do we know about the Yuga?

A CES announcement is most likely

The phone is apparently set to be unveiled in January or February, making a CES or MWC announcement likely. Given that Sony revealed the flagship Xperia ion and Xperia S at CES last year before following up with the mid-range Xperia P and Xperia U at MWC in February, we think CES is the more likely of the two. The Yuga is said to have a 5-inch 1080p display, which puts it in line with the HTC Droid DNA. HTC's phone uses a display from JDI, a company that Sony is heavily invested in, so there's a possibility that the manufacturer could use the exact same part, but JDI recently revealed a 5-inch 1080p WhiteMagic display that uses a white extra sub-pixel to offer brighter images or longer battery life. Given the Droid DNA's battery woes, a WhiteMagic display would be a good differentiator for Sony.

We could see a lot more of the Yuga soon

As for the rest of the phone's specs, the Yuga is said to be powered by "the latest" Qualcomm processor and 2GB of RAM, but beyond that not much is known. Earlier rumors reported Android 4.1 and a 12-megapixel sensor on-board, but the most recent leak declined to mention camera specs. All should become clear over the coming months, or perhaps earlier: Russian mobile specialist Eldar Murtazin, famed for leaking new phones, says he has a prototype in-hand and is planning a preview for tomorrow, so stay tuned for more Yuga updates.
