Paulo Shakarian, a professor at West Point's Network Science Center, has developed an algorithm aimed at shutting down decentralized terrorist organizations like al Qaeda. Wired takes a look at the paper, which proposes using social-network analysis to strategically force the organization to become more centralized, rather than simply targeting leaders like Osama bin Laden or Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi. This method is ineffective, says Shakarian, because these amorphous groups "regenerate their leadership."
