These days you can't have a successful fantasy brand without a tie-in video game, and Game of Thrones is the latest to get in on the action. Bigpoint has announced the first details of its MMO based on the TV show — and it does appear to be based on the TV show in particular, with little mention made of George R.R. Martin's original A Song Of Ice and Fire novels. The game will be played in a browser and is based on the Unity engine, meaning that you're unlikely to get a full-on roleplaying experience like Star Wars: The Old Republic, though the early screenshot above reveals that it is at least set in a 3D world.

We'll have to wait a week or so for further details, with the game set to be shown off at this year's Game Developers Conference from March 7th-9th. It's not the only Game of Thrones title in development, mind, with an action RPG from Atlus set to hit the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 later this year. While the series has received near-unanimous praise, we have to be sceptical about either game's prospects — does anyone remember the Lost, Battlestar Galactica, or The Sopranos tie-ins?
