RIM's fall from grace in the smartphone market now includes losing its top spot in its home market of Canada for the first time: Bloomberg reports that last year, RIM shipped 2.08 million BlackBerrys, compared to 2.85 million iPhones from Apple, after outselling Apple five-to-one back in 2008. The company has suffered a number of other setbacks recently, including an eroding foothold in enterprise markets, severe service outages, a strange dual-CEO leadership situation, a board shake up, and product delays. Apple's conquest may be mostly symbolic for RIM — Bloomberg says that sales in Canada only accounts for 7 percent of the company's revenue — but it might be the kind of reality check that RIM needs to turn things around. That is, if BlackBerry's Bold Team doesn't work its magic first.
