Dark Sky, the Kickstarter project that we wrote about last year, has come to fruition. The app, now available for $5.99 in the iTunes App Store, uses your location to predict hyper-local weather for the next hour. It also animates weather patterns both past and present with a gorgeous timeline feature. It works with newer models of the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch running iOS 5.0 or later. It's only been out for a couple of days, but reviews so far are generally solid, both in terms of design and effective weather prediction. The development team has also promised a few bug fixes soon.
Besides the welcome release of a well-designed weather app, it's nice to see one of the many Kickstarter projects we read about see release. So far, the app works in the continental US, with Alaska and Hawaii coming soon. If you live in Holland, you can actually get a similar iOS app for free, though the animations don't look nearly as striking. Everyone on other platforms, or in other places, is out of luck for now, but you can check the app's Twitter account in case the team decides to expand it (or if you backed it and are still waiting for your other rewards.)
